I have two HP printers, one I've been using and the other still unopened in the box. What will happen now that HP is ending subscription printing? The one currently in use should work with the original HP standard toner. But what about the one that's still new in the box? What will I need to do to make sure it will be usable? Do I need to get that one linked to the internet to make it usable in the future? Will HP make it such that these printers no longer need to be connected to the internet and work by having it on my wifi network?

Hi @rday1959 ,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are facing an issue with your HP Product. Not to worry I will help you to get a resolution to the issue.
HP has announced the discontinuation of its subscription-based printing services, such as Instant Ink, which has caused some confusion about the future usability of printers like the HP LaserJet M209dwe.
1. Your Current Printer in Use
- As long as you're using standard HP toner cartridges, your current printer will continue to work without any issue.
- HP Instant Ink subscriptions are no longer required, so there should be no impact on functionality.
2. Unopened Printer
- For the new, unopened HP LaserJet M209dwe, a few things to consider:
- Activation Process: If the printer came bundled with Instant Ink (or another subscription-based plan), you might need to activate it online initially. This allows HP to recognize the device and ensure it works with regular toner cartridges.
- Setup Requirements: During the setup process, you might need to connect the printer to WiFi temporarily to register it. After this, you can use it as a standalone printer.
3. Future Usability
- HP is moving toward a more flexible approach with its printers, allowing users to operate devices without requiring internet connectivity after the initial setup.
- WiFi vs. Internet: Most HP printers can work on a local WiFi network (for wireless printing) without needing constant internet access. However, software updates or troubleshooting features might require occasional connectivity.
4. What You Should Do
- For the unopened printer:
- Open and set it up to ensure it's functional and any potential issues are addressed while still within warranty.
- Register the printer with HP if prompted, but ensure you're not signing up for any subscription plans unless desired.
- Keep firmware updated: HP may release updates to remove subscription dependencies and enhance functionality.
- Test with standard toner cartridges: Verify that the printer accepts and functions with regular toner cartridges.
5. HP’s Commitment
- HP has indicated that printers with subscription plans will be usable without them. However, details may vary, so staying informed via HP’s support website is a good idea.
