Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I cannot get my printer connected wirelessly to my MacBook. I had a Best Buy Tech helping me remotely, and had me pushing and holding buttons, and trying different ways to connect, for quite a while, -- to no avail. They did what I understand was a driver update, and pages and pages of data scrolled on the computer screen for more than 30 minutes.

This printer was connected previously on a different MacBook, same WiFi, and when the toner cartridge needed replacing, it somehow lost connection and I could not get it back.

I've seen many posts about this same "stuck" issue, and the mention of receiving a private message with information to reset the printer to factory state. Will you please send me this reset information? Thanks!

Hi @SingularOne

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I’m really sorry you’ve had such a frustrating experience, especially after spending so much time with remote support and trying multiple button combinations.

I appreciate everything you’ve already done. When a LaserJet Pro MFP M29w refuses to reconnect after it previously worked, a full wireless reset and a clean setup often brings it back to life. I’ll guide you through the complete process, including the factory reset steps you asked for.

Below is a clear, step‑by‑step path to get the printer back to a fresh state and reconnect it to your Wi‑Fi from your MacBook.

1. Restore the Printer to Factory Defaults

This clears any stuck wireless profiles or partial configurations.

  1. Turn the printer on and let it become fully idle.
  2. Press and hold the Wireless button and the Cancel (X) button together for about 5 seconds.
  3. Release both buttons when the wireless light begins to blink.
  4. The printer will reset its network settings and return to factory defaults.

You’ll know the reset worked when the wireless light is blinking slowly, indicating it’s in setup mode.

2. Reconnect the Printer to Wi‑Fi (Mac Setup)

After the reset, use the HP App on your Mac to set up the printer again.

  1. Make sure your MacBook is connected to the 2.4 GHz band of your Wi‑Fi (this model does not support 5 GHz).
  2. Open the HP App on your Mac.
  3. Select Set Up a New Printer.
  4. The app should detect the M29w in setup mode.
  5. Choose your Wi‑Fi network and enter the password when prompted.
  6. Wait for the confirmation that the printer has joined the network.

If the printer doesn’t appear in the app:

• On the printer, press the Wireless button once to print a Wireless Network Test Report.
• Check that the printer shows “Ready for Setup” or “Not Connected.”
• Try the setup again.

3. Add the Printer to macOS

Once the printer is on Wi‑Fi:

  1. On your Mac, open System Settings.
  2. Go to Printers & Scanners.
  3. Select the + button.
  4. Choose HP LaserJet Pro MFP M29w from the list.
  5. Add it as an AirPrint printer.

4. If the Printer Still Won’t Join Wi‑Fi

Here are a few additional checks that often resolve stubborn cases:

• Restart your Wi‑Fi router.
• Move the printer closer to the router during setup.
• Ensure the Wi‑Fi password has no spaces at the beginning or end.
• Make sure MAC address filtering is not enabled on your router.
• Power cycle the printer after the reset before attempting setup.

If you’d like, I can also walk you through a USB‑based wireless setup, which sometimes works when the wireless reset alone doesn’t. Just let me know.

You’ve done all the right things so far, and with a clean reset and fresh setup, this model usually reconnects smoothly. I’m right here with you until it’s working again.
