HP LaserJet Pro P1102w Printer

Product: HP LaserJet Pro P1102w

Problem: Unable to setup the printer over Wifi

OS: MacOS Sonoma

Hi All,

I've been trying to get my printer to work over Wifi over the past several weeks but not getting anywhere. Note that the printer works fine over a USB connection to my MacBook but the main reason I went for the P1102w model was to be able to use the printer from any of my devices over Wifi. I've already tried all the usual remedies available on this forum and elsewhere online including:

  • resetting the network configuration by long pressing the cancel and wireless buttons on the printer
  • using the HP Smart app (which apparently is not designed to work with my printer model)
  • configuring via the Embedded Web Server (EWS) directly

I've even tried installing Parallels on Mac so that I can try doing the Windows setup and try with the HP Print Doctor software that is only available for Windows with no joy.

That's not to say that I've not made any progress. The following steps (after a full network reset) help get me most of the way there:

  1. Install the latest driver for MacOS from the HP support page
  2. Use that to setup the printer using a USB cable
  3. Access the EWS by going to Printers & Scanners > "HP LaserJet Pro P1102w" > Options and Supplies... > Utility > Open Printer Utility > HTML Config...
  4. Go to the Wireless page, click Enable.. and then Apply. This is the page where you should be able to select your Home Wifi network to connect to. Unfortunately for me, setting the Wifi name and password at this stage did not work because the page just throws ERR_EMPTY_RESPONSE when I click "Apply". If you don't encounter an error here, more power to you. You can skip the next steps.
  5. Go to the Wireless Direct Setup page and enable that, taking care to note the SSID that is displayed. Remember to change the print mode from "Print Only" to "Open Network" or the subsequent steps will not work.
  6. Now connect to the Wireless Direct Wifi SSID that you noted earlier. It should be something like "HP-Print-0A-..."
  7. You should now be able to access the EWS at http://192.168.223.1
  8. Go back to the Wireless page and try once again to configure your home wifi name and password.
  9. Even with this, I could see in the "Network Summary" page that the printer did not get an IP. To work around this, I configure the IP manually reserving the IP for the printer on the router side.
  10. I also had to lower the encryption level from WPA3 to WPA2 for the Wifi network.

Now my router sees the printer with the correct IP and my Macbook can also see the printer via Bonjour. However, the blue light on the printer is still flashing and actually sending a print job via Wifi just hangs. I'm now at my wit's end and desperately looking for help from someone in the community who might have faced a similar issue or from HP support.
