My printer will not start.  Have done all basic troubleshooting.

The Home Screen remains black - unlit.

is it possible that it won't start if I am out of ink???

Hi @Jcsprague ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the HP OfficeJet 4630/4635 printer should power on and display its home screen even if it's out of ink. Running out of ink only affects printing and scanning operations, not the ability to turn on the device. If the home screen remains black and unlit, the issue is likely related to power or hardware, not the ink supply.

Here are steps to troubleshoot this issue:

1. Verify Power Supply

Check the power connection:

  • Ensure the printer is plugged directly into a working wall outlet (not a surge protector or power strip).
  • Verify the power cable is securely connected to the printer and the outlet.

Test the outlet:

  • Plug another device (like a lamp) into the same outlet to ensure it has power.

Inspect the power cable and adapter:

  • Check for any visible damage to the cable or adapter.
  • If possible, test the printer with a compatible power cable from another HP device.

2. Perform a Hard Reset

  • Disconnect the power cable from the printer and unplug it from the outlet.
  • Wait for 60 seconds.
  • Reconnect the power cable and turn on the printer.

3. Check for Signs of Power

  • Listen for sounds (e.g., fans or internal mechanisms).
  • Observe any indicator lights (even a faint flicker).
    • If the printer makes noises or shows some light but the screen stays black, it could be a display issue.

4. Test with a Different Outlet

  • Move the printer to a different location and plug it into another wall outlet.

5. If It Still Doesn't Start

  • The issue could be a hardware failure related to the power supply unit (PSU) or the printer's internal circuitry.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
