Hi @DerryW

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand how frustrating it can be when you're trying to print with your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 but can't connect to the printer, especially when you have no internet access and need to print urgently.

Here are some steps you can try to get the printer working offline using a USB cable:

1. Ensure the USB Cable Is Properly Connected

  • First, make sure that you're using a compatible USB cable (a standard USB-A to USB-B cable). The USB-B end should connect to the printer, and the USB-A end should go into your computer’s USB port.
  • Check that both ends of the cable are securely plugged in and there are no bent or damaged connectors.

2. Install Printer Drivers

If you haven’t already installed the printer drivers for the OfficeJet Pro 7720, you need to do so manually.

Steps to install drivers:

  • Visit HP's support website: Go to HP Support for OfficeJet Pro 7720.
  • Enter your printer model (HP OfficeJet Pro 7720) and select your operating system.
  • Download and install the latest drivers for your printer. These drivers will enable your computer to recognize the printer and communicate with it over the USB connection.
  • Follow the installation prompts. The setup wizard should detect your printer and allow you to set it as your default printer.

3. Set Printer as Default

After installing the drivers, make sure your printer is set as the default printer:

  • Open Settings on your Windows computer.
  • Go to DevicesPrinters & Scanners.
  • Find your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 in the list, and click on it.
  • Click on Set as default to ensure that all print jobs go to this printer when you print.

4. Check the Printer’s Status

  • Ensure that the printer is powered on and there is no error message or paper jam.
  • On the printer screen, check that the printer shows Ready or Online and not Offline.

5. Print a Test Page

Once everything is set up, try printing a test page:

  • Go to Control PanelDevices and Printers.
  • Right-click on your HP OfficeJet Pro 7720 and select Printer Properties.
  • Click on Print Test Page and see if it prints successfully.

6. Check Printer Queue

Sometimes, documents can get stuck in the print queue, preventing new print jobs from being processed.

Steps to check the print queue:

  • Open Devices and Printers on your computer.
  • Right-click on your printer and choose See what's printing.
  • If there are any stuck print jobs, click Cancel all documents to clear the queue.
  • Try printing again.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

I  don't think I explained my issue very well in my previous post.  Basically I would like to use my printer offline. The issue I have is, every time I click on the HP icon I get the message "No internet connection" of which I'm fully aware.  The printer does not let me print or scan without connecting the printer to the internet, which is what I don't want to do, and is the reason I purchased the specific USB A and USB B cable to go between the printer and my lap top.

Thank You

Hi @DerryW,

Thank you for your response. It sounds like your printer is trying to connect to the internet for certain functions, which is causing the issue when you try to use it offline. Since you’ve got the USB A to USB B cable to directly connect your printer to your laptop, let’s work on configuring your printer to use it offline without needing an internet connection.

Here are a few steps that could help you resolve the issue:

Disconnect from Wi-Fi:

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the Wi-Fi settings and disconnect from the network. This should prevent the printer from trying to connect to the internet.

Use the Printer in USB Mode:

  • Plug the USB cable into both your printer and laptop. Make sure your laptop recognizes the printer via USB and not over the network. In some cases, the printer software might default to looking for a network connection, so you may need to manually select the USB option.
  • On your laptop, go to your Printer & Scanners settings and see if your printer shows up. It should appear as a local printer via the USB connection. If it’s not showing up, try reinstalling the printer driver from the HP website.

Turn off HP Smart or Cloud Services:

  • The HP Smart software may try to connect your printer to the internet even when using a USB connection. If you’re using HP Smart, try opening it and look for any settings related to cloud services or Wi-Fi and disable them. The software should then recognize your printer locally via USB.

Manual Printer Setup via USB:

  • Sometimes, it’s best to uninstall and reinstall the printer software, choosing the “local printer” or “USB connection” option during setup.
  • If you’re prompted for a network setup during installation, look for an option that allows you to set it up as a USB printer instead.

Update Printer Firmware (Optional):

  • If your printer insists on trying to connect to the internet, check if there’s a firmware update available that may allow for better offline functionality. This would require temporarily connecting the printer to the internet, but it could resolve future issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
