Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

My HP8620 doesn't show up on my network when I try to connect it using an ethernet cable. Neither my Netgear switch nor my AT&T router recognize it (plugged it into my switch, no lights on the switch or printer light up, same result when I disconnected from the switch and went straight to the router). Rebooted printer, switch, and router after connecting the ethernet cable, still nothing. Tried manually setting IP address, DNS, etc. - still unsuccessful. The printer is running the latest firmware revision (FDP1CN2022AR - it was fun getting the firmware up to date). The wired status page from the printer EWS shows the ethernet connection as enabled but not connected even when connected to the switch or the router with an ethernet cable. All cables I've tried this with have been tested and are good.

Here's the thing - it will connect using WiFi. Once I got the firmware updated to connect to a WPA2 connection, I can connect the printer to my router over WiFi with no problem. I guess I have the reverse problem of most other people.

The USB connection works, too (the printer had been connected via USB for the majority of its life), but the USB has been disconnected since I have been trying to get the computer connected to my network. I've tried restoring the default network settings, but all that does is reset my WiFi connection.

I'm hoping I can get this printer connected using ethernet to free up a WiFi channel. The ethernet connection capability was one of the reasons I bought this printer!

Hi @Gerald726

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I understand how frustrating it feels when the wired connection refuses to work even though WiFi and USB are fine. You’ve already shown great persistence by updating firmware, testing cables, and trying both router and switch connections—that’s excellent troubleshooting.

Since the Ethernet port isn’t lighting up and the printer reports “enabled but not connected,” the issue is likely with the physical link negotiation or the port itself. Let’s go through a structured set of checks:

1. Verify the Ethernet port and cable

  • Try connecting the printer directly to the router with a known‑good Cat5e or Cat6 cable.
  • Check if the link lights on both the printer and router/switch port illuminate. If neither side lights up, the port may not be establishing a physical connection.

2. Confirm network settings

  • On the printer’s control panel, navigate to Setup → Network Setup → Ethernet Settings.
  • Ensure Ethernet is enabled and set to Automatic for speed/duplex.
  • Avoid manually forcing IP/DNS until the link itself is active.

3. Run a network test from the printer

  • From the control panel, go to Setup → Reports → Network Configuration Page.
  • Print the report and check whether the wired section shows “Connected” or “Disconnected.”
  • If it shows disconnected, the printer is not detecting the cable link.

4. Power cycle with Ethernet only

  • Turn off WiFi on the printer (disable wireless).
  • Connect only the Ethernet cable.
  • Power cycle the printer and router/switch.
  • Check if the link lights appear.

5. Update drivers and firmware

6. Test with another network environment

  • If possible, connect the printer to a different router or switch temporarily.
  • This helps confirm whether the issue is with the printer’s Ethernet port or your current network hardware.

You’ve already proven the printer works fine over WiFi and USB, so the core functions are intact. If the Ethernet port still shows no link lights after these steps, it points to a hardware fault in the port itself. In that case, continuing with WiFi or USB will be the practical workaround.

Would you like me to also share how to reserve a static IP for the printer over WiFi? That way, it behaves just like a wired device on your network and frees you from worrying about changing addresses.
