Where to even begin - I've spent literally days doing everything you can imagine trying to install this printer that I've had for over two years now. I have no clue when it stopped working as I don't print very often, but now need to for work (so this is pretty urgent for me) and it is just impossible.
Essentially, the printer itself has no problem connecting wirelessly to my Eero 5ghz router. My Lenovo Legion Pro 7i Laptop (Windows 11) has no problem connecting to the same router. No guest network, no dual bands, nothing like that disrupting either connection. While my computer has no problem finding the printer upon initial setup, it won't print - it needs to install the printer now, as well. Per HP Smart when I select Print Documents: "The selected printer is detected but not installed completely on your Windows system..."
When I ask it to install, it always, without question, fails with "Driver Unavailable". It then directs me to Windows 11 Printers & Scanners settings where I try adding the device (not the DIRECT), yet all it finds there is the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 series [E73BFE] - Scanner. Trying to add this always fails as well.
Here's everything else I've tried (some of these I've tried countless times):
- Trying again using the drivers directly from HP's website, both the full and the basic - neither succeed
- Trying to troubleshoot using HP Print and Scan Doctor (literally just asks me to try using HP Smart again...)
- Trying all installs running as administrator
- Connecting to the printer via USB. This lets me print, but HP Smart still wants to install the driver for some reason, which always fails.
- Power cycling the printer and my computer multiple times
- Factory resetting the printer
- Reinstalling HP Smart
- Following all steps the virtual assistant gave me until it gave up and sent me here
- Uninstalling any and all HP programs off my computer, going as far as deleting files from the registry editor
- Deleting all files under the DRIVERS and PRINTERS folders under System32 then restarting
- Checking Device Manager for literally any printer or imaging devices that I can clean uninstall (usually there are none)
- Visiting this thread and following all steps on the Check and Remove resource (then restarting afterward)
- Signing in to HP Smart's website and removing the printer from My Printers
- Making sure the printer is only a few feet away from the router and computer during all of the above attempted steps
EDIT: Per above, I was able to make this work on USB, but I'd really like to be able to print wirelessly.
Please let me know if you have any insight.

Hi @please124141224,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It seems like you've tried a lot of troubleshooting steps already, but let's see if we can find a solution. Here are a few additional suggestions you can try.
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor:
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the official HP website. This tool is designed to diagnose and resolve printing and scanning problems. It might identify and fix issues with the printer driver installation.
Remove Previous Printer Entries:
- Ensure there are no remnants of previous printer installations. Go to "Printers & Scanners" in Windows 11 settings and remove any previous instances of the HP OfficeJet Pro 9010 series.
Clean Boot:
- Perform a clean boot on your Windows system to ensure no third-party applications or services are conflicting with the printer installation. This can help isolate the issue.
- Press Win + R to open the Run dialog, type msconfig, and press Enter.
- In the System Configuration window, go to the Services tab, check "Hide all Microsoft services," and then click "Disable all."
- Go to the Startup tab and click "Open Task Manager." Disable all startup items.
- Close Task Manager, go back to the System Configuration window, and click "Apply" and then "OK."
- Restart your computer.
Update Windows and Drivers:
- Make sure your Windows 11 is fully updated, including optional updates. Also, check for any pending driver updates, especially for your network adapter.
Temporarily Disable Firewall/Antivirus:
- Temporarily disable your firewall and antivirus software to ensure they are not blocking the printer installation. Remember to re-enable them after testing.
Manually Install the Driver:
- Extract the downloaded HP driver files and manually install the printer driver. You can do this by going to "Printers & Scanners" in Windows settings, selecting "Add a printer," and then choosing "The printer that I want isn't listed." Follow the on-screen instructions and provide the path to the extracted driver files.
Check Compatibility Mode:
- Right-click on the driver installation file, go to Properties, and under the Compatibility tab, try running the installer in compatibility mode for a previous Windows version (e.g., Windows 10).
USB Connection:
- As you mentioned, try connecting the printer via USB and let Windows install the driver. This might help establish a baseline for the driver installation.
After trying these steps, attempt to install the printer wirelessly again. If the issue persists, the USB connection might provide a temporary workaround until the wireless issue is resolved.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.

Thanks, @alden4. I tried all of these solutions with no luck unfortunately, though I admit I couldn't really follow Manually Install the Driver solution - I don't have any files extracted for these drivers, I just downloaded installers from HP and used the HP Smart app (neither of which worked). No extracted files to use to manually install.
Also, I was able to make USB printing work, but this is only when connected via USB. Edited my first post to reflect this...
