Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

Hi all,  this printer belonged to an insurance company and the owner was giving away their old printers.  It's in perfect condition but I can't connect it to a network.  Plugging in ethernet cable does nothing.  There is no wireless setup menu available on the touchscreen like there should be.  Factory reset has done nothing.  I believe it has an enterprise version of firmware or settings that I can't access have been adjusted.  I tried updating firmware but the printer stays in a "busy" status which doesn't allow the update to start.  The only way I can communicate with this printer is the USB cable but I would really like to be able to set this up on my home network.  I would appreciate any help getting the wireless setup menu to show up on this printer.  Thanks.

@Einstein863, Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Here are the troubleshooting steps to help get the wireless setup menu visible on your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 and resolve the network connection issue:

Verify Printer Firmware Version

Check the current firmware version to ensure it's not an enterprise or customized version that might limit network functionality.

Use the printer’s control panel:

Go to Setup > Printer Maintenance > Firmware Update.

If the printer is stuck on "busy," try rebooting it and ensure there are no ongoing print jobs or connections.

Perform a Network Reset

A network reset can help if the wireless setup menu is hidden due to incorrect settings:

On the printer control panel, go to Setup > Network Setup > Restore Network Defaults.

This should reset the printer’s network settings and restore the wireless setup options.

Access the Printer’s Embedded Web Server (EWS)

If you can connect the printer via USB, you may be able to configure network settings using the Embedded Web Server (EWS).

Connect the printer to your computer via USB.

Open a browser and type http://192.168.1.1 or the printer’s IP address into the address bar. (Find the printer’s IP by printing a network configuration page from the printer’s control panel).

From here, you can adjust the network settings and enable wireless connectivity.

Check for Wi-Fi Network Compatibility

Ensure that your network is compatible with the printer's wireless settings (the printer typically supports 2.4 GHz networks, not 5 GHz).

If your router is dual-band, try setting it to 2.4 GHz only temporarily to see if the printer can connect.

Use HP Smart or HP Printer Assistant

Install the HP Smart app on your computer or mobile device, and try setting up the printer through the app. It may allow you to bypass the printer’s control panel and configure wireless settings directly from your device.

I hope this helps.

Please feel free to reply here if you have any questions or if you need further clarification on any of the steps.

Take care and have a good day.
