macOS 10.13 High Sierra

I have the "checking registration status" problem.  I have an HP Officejet Pro 8620 and all seems to be working fine, even the HP Smart software says I am up to date on updates.

 

But when I press the printer's leftmost button on touchpad to check connectivity and registration status, it just hangs for a few minutes displaying  "checking registration status" 

 

It then just returns to main printer menu and displays a yellow exclamation point on the same icon I pressed.

 

I unplugged the printer for 30 seconds and replugged in but to success.

What else can I try?

I believe you are referring to the ePrint icon on the printer screen.

 

 

HP ePrint is a secure cloud-based service that lets you print from anywhere using an email account and an active internet connection.
