HP Smart Tank Plus 559 Wireless All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 11

So after about two years of having this printer and the warranty now being expired my printer has decided to lose the ability to connect to the wifi. I've done every trouble shoot going. I've restored the printer back to factory settings, I've tried to connect to WPS, I've rebooted and rebooted my laptop, router and printer. I've had the router sat on top of the printer. I've updated drivers on my pc and printer and nothing works.  The printer will print via a USB but this isn't practical because I'm downstairs and my printer is upstairs.  There's no room for it downstairs anymore so I cannot move it.  I've tried re-setting the wifi mode but unfortunately when I press the cancel button and wifi button simultaneously nothing happens. Apparently it's meant to make the power button flash but it doesn't do anything.  All I am getting is a flashing blue dot above the wifi button and the wifi bars just constantly scrolling.

This printer doesn't actually have a touchscreen I have to use the Smart App but even that doesn't work. It shows the printer but it says offline and simply will not connect unless I attach the USB. I've tried the information button to obain the IP address but it doesn't come out without anything.

I've tried the wizard in EWS and that doesn't work but I did get eventually get an error message which is a coded error message which I have no idea what it means (see image attached) HP Error Message.jpg

I'm starting to think that the buttons at the back of the "plate" where the cancel, print, wifi etc don't work because my power button has always been dodgy.  I've never been able to press it and it turn off, no matter how long I've pushed it in or how hard or wherever on the button, I've always had to pull the power cord out to switch it off so maybe that's the reason why I cannot press the cancel button and wifi, because the buttons behind the panel don't work.

Whatever the issue, I'm at a loss because this printer simply won't connect to the wifi and with half a tank of every colour left in the printer I'm loathed to just get rid of it and buy a new one.

Any assistance would be appreciated please.  I'm at the end of my tether.

Thank you in advance

Hi @HilaryMcG1

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I truly understand how exhausting this has been—your persistence in trying every possible reset, update, and workaround shows real dedication. The fact that USB printing works confirms the core print system is functional, but the wireless interface and control panel responsiveness need deeper attention.

Your HP Smart Tank 559 is showing signs of a failed wireless module or unresponsive control panel, which may prevent Wi-Fi setup and button-based resets. Let's isolate the issue and attempt recovery using alternate methods.

Key Clarifying Questions Before Proceeding

To tailor the next steps precisely, could you confirm:

  • Was the printer ever enrolled in Instant Ink or HP+?
  • When you press the Information + Cancel buttons together, does any page print?
  • Have you tried connecting via Wi-Fi Direct from your PC or phone?
  • Is the HP App installed on your Windows 10/11 PC or mobile device?

These answers will help determine whether the issue is with the wireless module, button interface, or software communication.

Immediate Actions to Try

1. Attempt Wi-Fi Direct Connection

Even if standard Wi-Fi fails, Wi-Fi Direct may still be active:

  • On your PC, go to Settings > Wi-Fi and look for a network named like DIRECT-xx-HP Smart Tank 559.
  • Connect to it using the default password: 12345678.
  • Open the HP App and try printing or accessing settings.

2. Use HP App to Reconfigure Wireless

  • Open the HP App on your PC or mobile device.
  • Select your printer > Advanced Settings > Network.
  • If the Embedded Web Server loads, go to Wireless Setup Wizard and manually enter your Wi-Fi credentials.
  • If the page fails to load or throws a JavaScript error (as seen in your image), skip to the next step.

3. Try USB-Based Wireless Setup

  • Connect the printer via USB to your PC.
  • Open the HP App > Add Printer > Select USB-connected printer.
  • Go to Settings > Wireless Setup and configure Wi-Fi from there.
  • Once setup completes, disconnect USB and test wireless printing.

4. Print Network Configuration Page

  • Press and hold Information + Cancel together for 3 seconds.
  • If successful, this prints a page with the IP address and wireless status.
  • If nothing prints, the control panel buttons may be unresponsive.

If Buttons Are Unresponsive

Based on your description of the power button and inability to trigger Wi-Fi reset:

  • The internal button board may be misaligned or failing.
  • This would prevent manual resets and Wi-Fi mode activation.
  • If Wi-Fi Direct and USB-based setup both fail, the wireless module may be non-functional.

Sadly that did not work and I still cannot connect the printer to the wi-fi.  I am attaching images to show each step by step thing I did and what happened as a result.  Hopefully it may shed some light.

This was the last of the instructions given to try and none of them worked 😞

Hopefully this all assists you in trying to find out the issue.

Kind regards

Hello @HilaryMcG1

I can understand how draining this has been—after trying factory resets, WPS, USB setup, the HP App, and even the Embedded Web Server, it’s disheartening to still see your Smart Tank 559 stuck with flashing Wi‑Fi lights and no connection.

Thank you for the persistence you’ve shown; the detail you shared makes it clear you’ve been thorough.

From what you describe, two possibilities stand out:

Likely Causes

Control Panel Button Board Failure

  • Since the power button has always been unresponsive and the Cancel/Wi‑Fi reset combination does nothing, the internal button board may not be registering presses.
  • This would explain why you cannot trigger Wi‑Fi setup mode or print a configuration page.

Wireless Module Failure

  • The constant scrolling Wi‑Fi bars and flashing blue dot indicate the printer is searching but not associating with any network.
  • If USB printing works but wireless setup fails across all methods, the Wi‑Fi module itself may no longer be functional.

Steps You Can Still Try

Wi‑Fi Direct Test

  • On your PC or phone, check Wi‑Fi networks for one named DIRECT‑xx‑HP Smart Tank 559.
  • If it appears, connect using password 12345678.
  • If successful, the wireless hardware is at least partially working.

USB‑Based Wireless Setup (Final Attempt)

  • Connect the printer to your PC with USB.
  • In the HP App, go to Settings > Wireless Setup.
  • Enter your Wi‑Fi credentials and attempt to push them to the printer.
  • If this fails again, it confirms the wireless module is not accepting configuration.

Check Router Compatibility

  • Ensure your router is broadcasting 2.4 GHz WPA2‑Personal.
  • Avoid WPA3‑only mode, hidden SSIDs, or unusual characters in the Wi‑Fi name.
  • Even though other devices connect fine, printers are more sensitive to these settings.

Since the printer cannot reset Wi‑Fi mode via buttons and fails to connect even through USB setup, the issue is most likely hardware—either the button board or the wireless module. With USB printing working, the print engine is fine, but wireless functionality may not be recoverable through software.
