If your HP OfficeJet Pro 8710 is not scanning to your laptop, follow these troubleshooting steps:

Step 1: Verify Scanner Functionality

  • Confirm that the scanner is functioning correctly by performing a scan directly from the printer's control panel.

Step 2: Check the Paper Path and Settings

  • Ensure there are no obstructions in the paper path.
  • Make sure the documents are properly loaded on the scanner bed or in the Automatic Document Feeder (ADF).

Step 3: Restart the Printer and Laptop

  • Turn off both the printer and the laptop.
  • Unplug the printer power cord from the power source, wait for 60 seconds, then plug it back in and turn on the printer.
  • Restart your laptop.

Step 4: Update Printer Firmware (Update the firmware on an HP printer | HP® Support)

  • Go to the HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads page. Enter your printer model number and search for the latest firmware update. Follow the instructions to download and install the firmware update.

  1. Turn off the printer.
  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.
  3. Press and hold the power button for 30 seconds.
  4. Wait for 60 seconds and connect the power cord back in.
  5. Turn on the printer.

  2. Unplug the power cord from the back of the printer.

Step 5: Reinstall Printer Software

  • Uninstall the existing printer software on your laptop.
  • Download and install the latest version of the printer software from 123.hp.com.

Step 6: Verify Network Connection

  • Ensure that both your printer and laptop are connected to the same Wi-Fi network.
  • If using USB, ensure the cable is securely connected and not damaged.

Step 8: Perform Scanner Maintenance

  • Clean the ADF and scanner glass as debris may affect scanning.
  • Ensure the scanner head moves without obstruction and verify the proper functioning by checking from the control panel.

Step 9: Check Printer Configuration

  • Verify default printer settings on your laptop are correctly configured:
    • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    • Right-click on your printer and select "Set as default printer".
