Can a printer that won't connect to the computer be faulty or is it a internet issue?

Hi @Stef94,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I hear that your HP Printer won't connect to the computer.

Follow these steps if your printer still won't connect:

1. Verify and Reset the Wireless Connection:

  • Check the Network: Make sure your computer isn’t on a guest network, restricted public network, or VPN, as these block printer discovery.

  • Reset Printer Wi-Fi: If your printer has a touch screen, go to the Wireless or Network Setup menu and select Restore Network Defaults. For models without a screen, hold down the Wi-Fi and Cancel buttons simultaneously for about 5 seconds until the power/wireless lights blink.

  • Reconnect: Put the printer in setup mode and use the HP Smart App on your computer to add it to your network.

2. Check Your USB Connection (If Applicable):

  • Ports & Cables: Disconnect the USB cord and plug it into a different port directly on your computer (avoid USB hubs or docking stations).

  • Cable Length: Ensure your USB cable is under 3 meters (10 feet) long to avoid data transmission drops.

3. Reinstall the Drivers and Software:

  • Remove Old Devices: Go to your computer's Bluetooth & Devices settings, find the old printer, and remove it.

  • Clean Install: Open the official HP Support Assistant page to run automated diagnostics, or completely uninstall and download the latest HP Smart software to set it up fresh.

4. Troubleshoot Windows Print Spooler:

If your computer detects the printer but nothing is printing:

  • Press the Windows Key + R, type services.msc, and hit Enter.

  • Scroll down to Print Spooler, right-click it, and select Stop.

  • Press Windows Key + R again, type spool, and open the PRINTERS folder. Delete all the temporary files inside it.

  • Go back to Services, right-click Print Spooler, and select Start.

I hope this will help.

Take care and have a good day.

I'm an HP Employee.
