HP OfficeJet 5212 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Recently purchased a new HP laptop.  Installed HP Smart app.  My orinter is connected to my network via Wi-Fi but the only way my Laptop see my printer is if the Laptop is connected on Wi-Fi.  It will not recognize if my Laptop is connect with ethernet.  I would prefer to have my Laptop remain connected via ethernet as the speeds online are much faster.  My Laptop had no issues connected this way but for some reason this new Laptop seems to have a mind of it's own.  I have tried all of the trouble shooting I could find.  Any help would be appreciated.  Than you.

Hi @Oneleven ,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue is likely due to network communication settings. By default, HP Smart relies on the device being on the same network subnet to detect the printer. When your laptop is connected via Ethernet, it may be on a different subnet than your Wi-Fi-connected printer, which could cause this problem.

Steps to Resolve:

Check Your Network Configuration:

  • Ensure that both your laptop (via Ethernet) and your printer (via Wi-Fi) are connected to the same network/subnet. For example, if your printer's IP is 192.168.1.x, your laptop should also have an IP in the 192.168.1.x range.

Assign a Static IP to Your Printer:

  • On your printer’s control panel, go to Network Settings or access its Embedded Web Server (EWS) via a browser using the printer's IP address.
  • Assign a static IP address to your printer. For example, set it to 192.168.1.100 (or any unused IP address within your network range).

Add the Printer Manually on HP Smart:

  • Open HP Smart on your laptop.
  • Click on Add Printer, then select Add Printer by IP Address.
  • Enter the static IP address assigned to your printer.
  • This ensures HP Smart recognizes the printer even if your laptop is on Ethernet.

Enable Network Discovery:

  • On your laptop, go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change advanced sharing settings.
  • Ensure that Network Discovery and File and Printer Sharing are turned on for your current network profile (likely "Private").

Update Router Configuration (if needed):

  • Some routers segment Ethernet and Wi-Fi devices. Log in to your router’s settings and ensure that communication between Wi-Fi and Ethernet devices is allowed.

Verify Firewall Settings:

  • Ensure that your firewall or antivirus software is not blocking communication between your laptop and the printer.
  • Temporarily disable the firewall to test if it resolves the issue. If it does, add HP Smart and the printer’s IP address to the allowed list.

Update Drivers and Firmware: Update the firmware on an HP printer

  • Ensure your printer’s firmware is up to date.
  • Visit the HP Software & Drivers website to download and install the latest drivers and firmware for the HP OfficeJet 5212.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
