I've been using HP Scan for years. Last time was 2 DAYS ago. Today I get the 'scanner communication cannot be established', although HP Smart app connects without issue.
I noticed that HP Smart app was installed on May 8 (WITHOUT ME KNOWING) and I found that when searching for other scan apps on my computer. HP Smart scans do NOT create PDF's that are TEXT SEARCHABLE like the ones I've created with HP Scan for YEARS.
I've spent about 3 hours on this today trying to get HP Scan (HPScan.exe) to work again.
Can someone help me with this?
I am distraught about HP Scan no longer working because I had TONS of shortcuts set up to scan all sorts of things going to many different folders.

Hi @bluekeys,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I can understand your frustration. Let's try to troubleshoot this issue step by step.
- Restart Devices: Begin by restarting both your computer and your HP Officejet Pro 8600 printer. Sometimes, a simple reboot can resolve connectivity issues.
- Check Wireless Connection: Ensure that your printer is connected to the same wireless network as your computer. You can usually check this from the printer's control panel or through its web interface.
- Update Drivers: Make sure you have the latest drivers and software for your printer installed on your computer. Sometimes, outdated drivers can cause communication problems. You can download the latest drivers from the HP website.
- Firewall/Antivirus: Check if your firewall or antivirus software is blocking HPScan.exe from accessing the network. You might need to add an exception for the HP Scan application.
- Reinstall HP Scan: If the issue persists, try uninstalling and then reinstalling the HP Scan software on your computer. This can sometimes resolve any corrupted files or settings.
- Check Scanner Settings: Double-check the scanner settings within HP Scan to ensure they are configured correctly for your printer. Make sure the correct printer is selected as the scanning device.
As for the issue with HP Smart not creating searchable PDFs, you may need to adjust the settings within the HP Smart app to enable OCR (Optical Character Recognition) for text searchability. This feature might be disabled by default.
I hope one of these solutions resolves your scanning issue!
Take care and have a good day.
