HP ENVY Photo 6255 All-in-One Printer
macOS 10.14 Mojave

Have installed new Router. Printer appears in Network but is asking for a "direct password". HP Password I have is not working. Can I over-ride this or generate new password?

Hi @MartinS13,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY Photo 6255 All-in-One Printer is asking for a password after setting up a new router, it usually refers to the Wi-Fi network password rather than an HP-specific password. Here are steps you can take to resolve the issue.

Connect to Your Router's Network

  • Ensure your printer is connected to the same Wi-Fi network that your new router is broadcasting.
  • If you don't know the Wi-Fi password, check the router label (often found on the bottom or back of the router) for the default Wi-Fi password.

Reset Printer Network Settings

  • You can reset the printer's network settings to clear any previous configurations.
  • To do this:
    1. On the printer control panel, go to Setup (the gear icon).
    2. Select Network or Network Setup.
    3. Choose Restore Network Defaults or Reset Network Settings.

Reconnect the Printer to Wi-Fi

  • After resetting, you’ll need to reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network:
    1. From the printer's control panel, go to Setup.
    2. Select Network or Network Setup.
    3. Choose Wireless Setup Wizard and follow the prompts to select your new Wi-Fi network and enter the password.

Using WPS (if available)

  • If your router supports WPS (Wi-Fi Protected Setup), you can connect your printer using this method:
    1. Press the WPS button on your router.
    2. On the printer, press the WPS button or choose the WPS option from the wireless setup menu.
    3. This should connect the printer to the network without needing a password.

Accessing Printer through HP Smart App

  • If you have the HP Smart app installed on your computer or mobile device, you can use it to help set up the printer:
    1. Open the HP Smart app and add the printer.
    2. Follow the on-screen instructions to connect it to the new Wi-Fi network.

Notes

  • The printer does not have an HP-specific password; it uses the Wi-Fi password to connect to your network.
  • If you want to change the Wi-Fi password for your network, you can do so through your router’s settings interface.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
