Hi @macdaw,
Welcome to The HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
I understand you are trying to connect your HP Smart Tank 5100 All-in-One Printer to your computer using a USB cable, follow these steps:
Prepare the USB Cable:
- Make sure you have a USB cable with a Type-A connector on one end (to connect to your computer) and a Type-B connector on the other end (to connect to your printer).
Turn On the Printer:
- Ensure that your HP Smart Tank 5100 is powered on.
Connect the USB Cable:
- Plug the Type-B end of the USB cable into the USB port on your printer.
- Plug the Type-A end of the USB cable into an available USB port on your computer.
Install Printer Software:
- If you haven’t already installed the HP Smart software, download and install it from the HP Support website or the HP Smart app. Choose the HP Smart Tank 5100 series and follow the on-screen instructions.
- If you have the printer’s installation CD, you can use that to install the necessary drivers and software.
Add the Printer in Windows:
- Windows 10/11: Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners. Click Add a printer or scanner. Windows should detect the printer and automatically install the necessary drivers. If prompted, select your HP Smart Tank 5100 and follow any additional on-screen instructions.
Test the Connection:
- After installation, print a test page to ensure the printer is correctly connected and functioning.
If the printer isn’t detected, try these troubleshooting steps:
- Ensure the USB cable is securely connected at both ends.
- Restart your computer and printer.
- Try using a different USB port on your computer.
- Check for any driver updates from HP’s website.
