Have an HP OfficeJetPro 6978 that we purchased from previous owner who was retiring from her business (no paperwork for the printer, but it does have a sticker that says refurbished). We're trying to get it to coordinate with our WiFi, and we've been all over the machine looking for numbers/letters to satisfy the WPS PIN "for your printer" prompt to add as an accepted device.  Thoughts? Anyone? Anyone? (All the previous answers have not yielded success. Just a sad note, "failed.")

Hi @Procyon_lotor,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

Finding the WPS PIN for your HP Officejet Pro 6978 printer can be a bit tricky, especially if you don't have the original paperwork. However, there are a few methods you can try.

  • Look for the WPS PIN on the Printer: Some HP printers have the WPS PIN printed on a sticker either on the back or bottom of the printer. Look carefully for any labels or stickers that might contain this information.
  • Check the Printer's Control Panel: Sometimes, you can find the WPS PIN by accessing the printer's control panel menu. Navigate through the settings menu on the printer's display screen and look for network or wireless settings. There might be an option to display the WPS PIN.
  • Use the Default WPS PIN: Some HP printers have a default WPS PIN, often printed on a sticker labeled "WPS PIN" or "Wireless Direct PIN." Common default WPS PINs for HP printers are 12345678 or 00000000. Try entering these default PINs if you can't find the actual one.
  • Reset the Printer: If none of the above methods work, you can try resetting the printer to its factory settings. This will remove any custom settings, including the WPS PIN. Refer to the printer's user manual for instructions on how to perform a factory reset.

Remember to ensure your printer is turned on and connected to your Wi-Fi network before attempting to enter the WPS PIN.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
