Welcome to the HP English Community --
Things have changed a great deal -
Years ago, ePrint was the standard method used to send email to an eligible printer's email address.
Today
When combined with HP+ service / contract,
HP OfficeJet Pro 9120e series and other select new printers support Print Anywhere.
What?
At this writing...
HP+ must be accepted and enabled to access, set up, and use Print Anywhere.
True - HP+ is optional for the printer.
That said, if you want access to Print Anywhere, you must accept and enable HP+ .
Read everything and then decide how -- and whether -- to move forward with Print Anywhere.
Continuing...
Print Anywhere shares some of the internal protocols used in the old ePrint technology but is not the same thing.
Pick and choose from the following what is relevant to your situation.
For example, if you already have HP+ enabled, scroll down to the section that explains Print Anywhere.
HP+ is an optional service contract that includes both benefits and responsibilities.
True, there are no upfront costs for the extra year's warranty.
HP+ provides access to Print Anywhere - remote printing similar to the old ePrint tech.
Reminder
This printer is protected by Dynamic Security. All ink used in the printer must include the embedded HP chip. The HP-Chip requirement is NOT related to HP+. Reference: HP Printers - Dynamic Security Enabled Printers

Requirements for HP+ printers
This topic describes the requirements for HP+ printers.
Keep the printer connected to the Internet
HP+ printers are cloud-connected devices that must remain connected to the Internet in order to function. The
Internet connection enables the printer to deliver HP+ specific app features and firmware updates.
During setup, you must connect the printer to the Internet using a supported network connection. After setup,
you can print using a USB cable connection, if desired, but the printer must still be connected to the Internet.
Use Original HP cartridges
Original HP cartridges are cartridges manufactured and sold by HP in official HP packaging. If non-Original HP
supplies or refilled cartridges are installed, HP+ printers will not operate as expected.
Have an HP account
Create or sign into an HP account to manage your printer.
==================================================
Print Anywhere shares some of the same protocols with the old ePrint -- it is not the same animal.
While sending email to the printer's email address might work, it is not the intended method.
You are correct: Much of the time emailing directly to the address does not send the message.
Side Bar
One of the things you must do is protect the printer's email address. What? The address cannot be changed and is not meant to be shared in the way the ePrint email address could be shared with allowed users.
Print Anywhere does generally require that you use the HP Smart method described in the documents and in the video that explains how to use the feature.
