How to enter ! in Wifi Password

I have a Color laser MFP179fnw, the help says to enter a ! to use the * key and keep pressing, this doesn't work on my printer it only displays * nothing else, can someone tell me how to enter the ! please

I understand you are trying to enter the exclamation mark (!) in the Wi-Fi password on your HP Color Laser MFP 179fnw, follow these steps:
 

Access the Wi-Fi Setup: On the printer’s control panel, navigate to the wireless setup menu.

Start entering the password: When you reach the point where you need to enter the Wi-Fi password, the numeric keypad will be active.

Switch to special characters:

• Press the * (star) key several times to toggle through different sets of characters, including special characters.
• Continue pressing until the! symbol appears.

Enter the exclamation mark: Once you see the !, select it to add it to the password.

Complete the password: Continue entering the remaining part of your password using the alphanumeric keypad.

If the * key does not allow you to cycle through special characters, you can try updating your printer's firmware or using the HP Smart app or a web browser to set up Wi-Fi, as it may allow easier input of special characters.

Thank you for your reply, as mentioned in my original question, the * and # keys do not have any other characters, i can keep pressing the * and that is all i get nothing else just *.  I have resolved it by just changing my wifi password so i doesn't contain a ! anymore, but would be interested to find out why i can't get the characters i should be able too on the printer.
