Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.
HP Recommended

I purchased this HP printer about a year ago and have had nothing but trouble!! I have always trusted the brand, but this changes that trust 100% I will never purchase HP again.  My printer constantly goes offline, I am talking every day or even more than once a day!  I cannot afford to buy another new printer, and I can't believe I would even have to think about that after a failed machine almost from the get go.  I have seen that there is a "sleep mode" for these models. I have read and read to find what should be "simple instructions" to turn the sleep mode on and off.  I am assuming mine may be on?  The "instructions" DO NOT WORK.. I cannot find a way to check it and turn it off.  Any help would be very so appreciated.

Hi @CTack,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP printer keeps going offline and you’re unable to disable or even find the sleep mode setting. Let’s go through a few checks to clarify how sleep mode works on HP printers and what you can do to reduce the offline issue.

Understand how sleep mode works on HP printers
On most HP models, sleep mode cannot be fully disabled by design.
You can usually only adjust the sleep timer, not turn sleep completely off.

Check the sleep timer from the printer control panel
On the printer screen, open Setup or Settings.
Look for Preferences, Power Management, or Energy Settings, then adjust the Sleep or Sleep Timer value to the maximum available time.

Check sleep settings using HP Smart
Open the HP Smart app on your computer or phone.
Go to Printer Settings > Advanced Settings (this opens the printer’s internal web page), then check Power or Energy settings for the sleep timer.

Turn off “Auto-Off” or “Energy Save” features
In the same Power or Energy menu, look for Auto-Off or Energy Save.
Disable Auto-Off if the option exists, as this can make the printer appear offline.

Prevent network dropouts (common cause of “offline”)
Sleep mode alone usually does not cause daily offline issues.
Check that the printer is connected to a stable Wi-Fi network and not switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands.

Set the printer to use a manual IP address
In the printer’s Advanced or Network settings, set a manual (static) IP address.
This prevents the router from changing the printer’s address, which often causes repeated offline status.

Disable “Use Printer Offline” on the computer
On your computer, open Devices and Printers and right-click your printer.
Make sure “Use Printer Offline” is unchecked.

Power reset to reapply settings
Turn the printer on and unplug the power cord from the rear and the wall.
Wait 60 seconds, reconnect directly to a wall outlet, and turn the printer back on.

I hope this helps.

I have seen these "instructions" unfortunately my model does not have a way to access "settings" as described in instructions as a "wrench" symbol

HI @CTack,

Thank you for the response.

Let’s go through a few steps to clarify how sleep works on this type of printer and what you can do to stop the frequent offline issue.

Understand why you cannot find sleep settings
On HP printers without a display screen, sleep mode cannot be manually turned off or adjusted on the printer itself.
These models manage sleep automatically and do not show a wrench or settings menu.

Know what sleep mode actually does
Sleep mode only dims the printer and reduces power use.
It does not normally cause the printer to go offline multiple times a day.

Check sleep and power settings through HP Smart
Open the HP Smart app on your computer.
Select the printer, then choose Advanced Settings (this opens the printer’s internal web page) and look under Power or Energy if available.

Disable Auto-Off if present
In Advanced Settings, check for Auto-Off or Energy Save.
Turn Auto-Off off if the option exists, as this can make the printer fully power down.

Fix the most common cause of “offline” status (network IP changes)
Offline issues on these models are usually caused by the router changing the printer’s IP address.
In Advanced Settings or your router settings, assign the printer a manual (static) IP address.

Make sure the computer is not forcing offline mode
On your computer, open Devices and Printers.
Right-click the printer and make sure Use Printer Offline is unchecked.

Keep the printer on 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi only
If your router uses a combined network name, the printer may lose connection.
Ensure the printer stays on the 2.4 GHz band, which these models require.

Perform a clean power reset
Turn the printer on and unplug the power cord from the rear and wall outlet.
Wait 60 seconds, reconnect directly to the wall, and turn the printer back on.

I hope this helps.

I am honestly at my wits end. For over 2 weeks I have attempted to get this issue resolved.  I have done everything I can, and I am so unbelievably disappointed in HP, which I have supported for over 30 years by buying their products.  I even went online and purchased an extended warranty so that I could speak to someone at HP to walk me through the repairs, and when I finally reached a representative after an hour, she disconnected the call after 10 minutes and she never had the courtesy to call back.... I wasted more money! I have tried to reinstall the HP Smart App several times, and when I do, I cannot even open it because it is blocked by a large white square telling me I must first "review three documents!"  I scroll through the documents, and nothing happens!

So, after only 1 year, I have no printer, I have lost $300, I wasted another $20 for warranty service, and I have lost it all! I have to spend another $300 (only a year later) simply because I made a mistake by buying an HP product.  What a total scam, how shameful for a huge international company to lie, cheat and take advantage of a disabled senior living on social security!
