Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I have the HP Envy 6458e printer. I moved and changed wifi, so now my HP app cant connect to the printer to reset wifi anymore. It just says device not connected. I tried clicking / holding the wifi button at the back but nothing is indicating that the printer is in bluetooth mode to connect to app.  It just makes noises and changes color purple/blue & wifi icon / no wofi icon.

Hi @ptn32,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for sharing the images. They show the HP Envy 6458e printer’s light bar glowing purple and blue, which indicates the printer is in Wi-Fi setup or Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) pairing mode. The color changes and sounds mean the printer is trying to enter setup, but it’s not fully connected yet.

Here’s how to fix this and reconnect your printer to the new Wi-Fi:

What’s Happening

  • The purple/blue glow means the printer is in Wireless Setup Mode (also called Wi-Fi Direct/BLE pairing).
  • The HP App can only connect if the printer is in this mode and your phone is nearby with Bluetooth enabled.
  • If the app says Device Not Connected, the printer either:
    • Timed out of setup mode.
    • It is stuck between Wi-Fi Direct and normal wireless mode.

Step 1: Reset Network Settings

  1. On the printer control panel:
    • Press and hold the Wireless button and the Cancel (X) button together for 5 seconds.
    • The light bar should flash and return to a steady color.
    • This restores network defaults.

Step 2: Enable Setup Mode

  • Press and hold the Wireless button for 3 seconds until the light bar pulses blue.
  • This activates Wi-Fi setup mode for 2 hours.

Step 3: Use the HP App to Reconnect

  • Open the HP App (not HP Smart).
  • Make sure Bluetooth is ON on your phone.
  • Tap Add Printer → Select your HP Envy 6458e.
  • Follow the prompts to connect to your new Wi-Fi network.

(If the app still doesn’t find the printer, restart your phone and printer, then retry.)

Step 4: Alternative Setup

If the HP App fails:

  • Connect via Wi-Fi Direct
    • On the printer, print the Information Page (press the i button).
    • Use the Wi-Fi Direct credentials to connect your phone or PC to the printer.
  • Then update Wi-Fi settings from the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
