Hi @Doug2672,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the printer might not be recognizing the new black cartridge. Here are some steps to try:

  • Power Cycle the Printer: Turn off the printer, unplug it from the wall, wait about a minute, then plug it back in and turn it on. This can sometimes reset any error messages.
  • Check Cartridge Compatibility: Make sure the black cartridge is compatible with the HP ENVY 5530. For this model, you typically need HP 61 or HP 301 cartridges, depending on your region.
  • Remove Protective Tape: If there is any protective tape on the new black cartridge, make sure it’s fully removed, as the printer won’t recognize the cartridge with it in place.
  • Reinsert the Cartridge: Open the cartridge access door, remove the black cartridge, and reinsert it. Ensure it is seated firmly in its slot.
  • Clean Cartridge Contacts: Power off the printer and carefully clean the copper contacts on the cartridge and in the cartridge slot with a lint-free cloth slightly dampened with distilled water. Let them dry fully before reinserting.
  • Check for Firmware Update: Sometimes a firmware update can fix compatibility issues. Go to the HP website and see if there’s a firmware update available for your printer. Update the firmware on an HP printer

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
