Common problems for INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Instant Ink. Check out this link: HP INSTANT INK, HP+ PLANS: INK AND TONER. .
HP Recommended

I keep having problems with the InstantInk service. Registration finally worked after many failed attempts, but i constantly get a message from HP telling me that a connection to my printer is not possible.

The printer is connected to my WLAN. I can print without problems, and I can see the printer's embedded webserver showing me printer status and cartridege status.  But in the (short) list of webservices InstanInk is marked as "inactive", and there is no button to activate it. I follwowed all the recommendations to turn the printer, router, and PC off/on, and even re-installed thr printer from scratch. Nothing helped. What else can I do?

Hi @Wolfgang_52,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Your description makes it clear that your printer and network are functioning, but the Instant Ink web services are marked “Inactive” with **no option to reactivate, **which means a sync issue between your printer, its Embedded Web Server (EWS), and the HP cloud. On your behalf, here’s the guidance to fix that:

1. Ensure Web Services Meet Requirements

  • The printer must be connected via Wi‑Fi or Ethernet; USB-only connections disable Internet-based services like Instant Ink web services.
  • It must be on a 2.4 GHz band (not just 5 GHz), and the router should support Bonjour (network discovery).

2. Check Network Configuration (DNS/Gateway)

Print a Network Configuration Page from the printer’s menu to verify:

  • IP Address
  • Gateway
  • DNS Entries

If DNS is missing or incorrect (e.g., 0.0.0.0), manually set it to 8.8.8.8 (Google DNS) via EWS:

  1. Log in to the Embedded Web Server using the printer’s IP in a browser.
  2. In Network Settings, set DNS to 8.8.8.8.
  3. Apply and restart your printer.

3. Remove and Re-enable Web Services

  1. In EWS, go to the Web Services tab.
  2. Choose Remove Web Services to clear the current state.
  3. After printer power cycle, reopen EWS → click Enable or Continueaccept terms to re-activate.
Some printers label this option differently, but it always appears here.

4. Update Firmware / Reset Entire Web Services

  • From EWS, under Settings > Printer Updates, click Check for Updates and install any available firmware.
  • After updating, repeat the steps to remove and re-enable Web Services. Updated firmware often restores missing “Activate” options.

5. Restart Everything in Proper Sequence

  1. Reboot your router and modem.
  2. Power cycle your printer (unplug for 60 seconds, replug).
  3. Open HP Smart and verify Instant Ink status:
    • Should change from “Inactive” to Active & Enabled.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
