HP OfficeJet 5255 All-in-One Printer

I have a Officejet 5255 All-In-One Printer. I am connecting it to my internet wirelessly and using this connection to connect to my laptop. It then begins to download an update. After a few minutes it says download failed. Then it resets everything. Disconnecting from my router and laptop. Is there a way to get the update and install via a USB flash driver? How can I get the printer to get the update?

Hi @xDemonicGamerx,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand you are facing an issue with your HP OfficeJet 5255 is having trouble downloading and installing its firmware update via the wireless connection, which is causing it to reset and lose connection with both your router and laptop. You can try downloading the firmware update manually and installing it using a USB flash drive, which often resolves issues like this.

Here's how you can do it:

Step 1: Download the Firmware Update Update the firmware on an HP printer

Go to HP's Official Website

  • Visit HP's Software and Driver Downloads.

Enter your Printer Model:

  • Enter "HP OfficeJet 5255" and select your exact model.

Select Firmware:

  • In the list of drivers, look for the Firmware section.
  • Download the latest firmware update available for your printer.

Step 2: Prepare a USB Flash Drive

Format your USB flash drive to FAT32 (this ensures compatibility with your printer).

  • Plug the USB into your computer, right-click on it in File Explorer, and select Format. Choose FAT32 and click Start.

Copy the downloaded firmware update file to the root directory of the USB flash drive.

Step 3: Install the Firmware via USB

Turn off your printer.

Insert the USB Flash Drive:

  • Plug the USB flash drive into the USB port on your HP OfficeJet 5255.

Enter Recovery Mode:

  • Hold down the Cancel and Resume buttons at the same time, and while holding them, power the printer back on.
  • Wait for the printer to show a "Recovery Mode" or "Update Mode" message on its display (if applicable).

Install the Firmware:

  • The printer should detect the update on the USB drive and automatically start the update process.
  • Follow any on-screen prompts if they appear. Otherwise, wait until the printer finishes the update.

Reboot the Printer:

  • Once the update completes, restart the printer.

Step 4: Reconnect the Printer to WiFi

After the update is complete, reconnect your printer to your wireless network by going through the WiFi setup process on the printer’s display.

Try printing a test page to confirm everything works as expected.

Refer to this document: HP OfficeJet 5255 All-in-One Printer User manual

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
