Been there, brother!! Thought I was going nuts and was ready to throw my printer out.   Let us know if you get back up and running.  Thanks.

Thanks @Mlm0912 for posting your solution. I downloaded an update to my printer last night  and got the nasty 79 Service Error message and continuous restarting. I tried the useless steps HP posted. I don't know what update got pushed down but I followed the HP instructions and downloaded and installed 20201021 from the HP site but still had the same 79 Service Error and restarting problem. After a day of troubleshooting, I came across your post and we are up and running!

I didn't trust 20201021 and found 20200612 online and downgraded my firmware and it appears to have fixed the problem (fingers crossed). I think the 20201021 firmware was the culprit. The initial update was triggered when I tried to print a PDF that may have been corrupt. I also changed the Manage Updates options, Check Automatically to off and to Always Prompt before install.

Thanks for posting the tips!

Don't know how you figured out the solution by turning IPv6 off Dairtel but that's the only thing that worked for me. Thank you!!! Really sucks that the new firmware update caused this unnecessary headache for me, lost several hours, even bought a new USB printer cable to redownload firmware from PC that didn't help. Turning off IPv6 fixed it.

If you look back to messages 4 and 5 in this thread, Mlm0912 said he thought the problems was in the wi-fi. His advice to turn off or remove software from other computers is consistent with that.

I reasoned that because the crash always seemed to come shortly through printer power up that remote computer access or polling was not the problem. What made sense is the problem occurred during the printer acquiring DHCP address from the router. Maybe the IPV6 code is involved.

Mlm0912 originated the firmware solution. I should note that everyone who reports firmware update as successful for them is revering back to previous firmware. I theorize that this older firmware does not have an IPV6 bug and new firmware does.

..............

Hour Later: No so smart am I. I'net provided Info not helpful as with the "79" error, the printer is off-line (so cannot use web browser to make change) and the printer control panel is not usable as it goes to 79 immediately I remove my thumb!!

Now what to do??? I really need to print today!!

So this is how do it on my Mac. Your set up may be different. Note that to avoid the system 79 error mess, I had to plug a network cable into my printer from my computer to get a direct connection between the two.

You have to get to the local printer's web page. I was able to go there from the system preferences/printers & scanners/ and then I selected my printer.

I then chose options and supplies and there's a dialog box that says show printer webpage. Click on that button.

from there you get your local printer's configuration page.

Look under the networking tab for IP6 configuration and make sure it's off.

If it's not off- go to the configuration/ advanced and unclick the IP6 box.

Myles6,

Thank you -- THANK YOU!!!

Your instructions worked just fine for me.

(First time the 'APPLY" button was too low in the window and the change did not take so I tried it again and then did do the 'Apply' and all is working fine now!!

(It's a good thing I had a network cable in the cabinet!!)

Hi there.

I meet the same problem and finally resolved it.

I upgraded my printer to newest firmware datecode is 20201020( this version have a terrible bug). But printer automatically restart again and again and say "79 Service Error Turn off then on". until I closed all network connections of the printer, the restart disappeared.

Finally, I downgrade the firmware datecode to 20200612. You need to allow downgrade and allow update and disallow autoupdate. All things is ok.

You can download the firmware from Firmware 20200612

Please refer reddit hp printer

I hope you can resolve it.
