When the printer is freshly turned on, it connects to wifi and I can wirelessly print. After say 20minutes go by with the printer idle, it shows a strong wifi signal, but the connection status is not there on the wifi connection screen and no IP address is available, so it also fails a wireless test.
The printer is very close to my router, so it's not a signal issue. I have turned off wifi direct as well (per another thread on the M281 and that has not helped).
In contrast, if I run an ethernet cable to it (which is not ideal for my setup), I can print any time and the printer wakes up and prints.
The only way I can get the M283 to work wirelessly after the printer goes idle is to turn the whole thing on and off, or to reset the wireless.

@SteveP7, Welcome to HP Support Community!
What is the Operating System installed on the computer?
Meanwhile, use the guided troubleshooter Troubleshooting | Wireless Printing Center for instruction to isolate and resolve the issue.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi TEJ1602, thanks for replying.
This is generally an issue with the printer not staying connected to the wifi, regardless of the device.
I am trying to use various wireless devices to print to the printer, Android phones, iPads, and Windows 10 laptops.
No matter which device it is, the printer will not maintain a wifi connection and loses its connection after some period of time.
This behavior does not happen when I use a network cable. And the printer will wake up within seconds when any of those devices try to print.
I would love to diagnose this so if there's something else more specific you need, I'll get it.

You may need to instead go into your router settings and try changing the channel manually. Experiment with different channels to see which one works best.
Update the printer firmware
Download available firmware updates from the HP website
With the printer on and connected to the computer, go to HP Customer Support - Software and Driver Downloads, and then identify your printer. Look for and install any available firmware updates. Refer to the document HP Printers - Updating or Upgrading Printer Firmware
Assign manual IP to the printer
The steps on how to set a manual IP address can be found here.
For the DNS servers please use 8.8.8.8 for the Manual Preferred DNS Server and 8.8.4.4 for the Alternate DNS server. These are Google’s public DNS servers.
Try printing.
Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Hi... so something is still wrong.
I assigned an IP manually and also put in the fixed DNS info.
The printer worked this morning after checking with like 30minutes between wireless printing.
When I left for the afternoon and came back, the printer could not be found on my network. I touched the screen on printer and checked Network Status.
It has "Status: OFF"
"Wireless: ON"
And it sees my SSID (has the SSID listed).
I don't understand why the wireless status is turning off... that seems to be the root cause, that when the printer hibernate after some period and I wake it up on the touch screen it has lost wifi connection.
Any thoughts?

The only option left is to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
The reset instructions are specific for your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.
I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instruction to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
In order to access your private messages, click the private message icon on the upper right corner of your HP Forums profile, next to your profile Name or simply click on this link.
Hope this helps!
