HP LaserJet MFP M140we Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

Hello,

I'm having an issue with my printer where it just won't print, but it only recently happened. The printer has always been used to print wirelessly. I've uninstalled the HP Smart software and removed the printer from the computer and started over from scratch. When the HP Smart software goes thru the process of installing the printer it never actually finishes the installation. It gets to a certain point in the process and when I click next or continue the next screen is blanked out and I have to click the X to close the install. I can add the printer in Printers and Devices. Anytime I try to print a test page or print anything, a print job will show quickly in the queue but then is quickly deleted. If I go into the Advanced Setting in the HP Smart app and print the network configuration page, it works just fine. I've even tried to install the printer using the USB cable but the printer still wants to connect wirelessly to get thru the installation process. But again it gets to a certain point where I click to proceed and the next page in blanked out. The HP Smart app sees the printer, says it's ready to print, I've run the diagnostic tool and it finds no errors but it doesn't print. I've also updated the firmware.

Any help is much appreciated, thank you.

Hi @AnitaTire,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can feel the frustration of watching your HP LaserJet MFP M140we go from a reliable workhorse to a silent bystander, especially when everything seems to be working but nothing actually prints. Let’s get this sorted together.

Here's What You Can Try Step-by-Step

1. Reset the Printer’s Network Settings

Let’s start fresh:

  • Press and hold the Wireless and Cancel buttons on the printer for 5 seconds until the Power light blinks.
  • This restores Wi-Fi setup mode, allowing the printer to reconnect cleanly.

2. Use HP Smart’s “Diagnose & Fix” Tool

Since HP Smart sees the printer but can’t print:

  • Open HP Smart.
  • Click on “Printer Settings” > “Advanced Settings”.
  • Scroll to “Diagnose & Fix” and run it. This tool can often resolve hidden driver or spooler issues.

3. Manually Set the Printer Port

Sometimes the printer is set to a WSD port, which can cause silent failures:

  • Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
  • Right-click your printer > Printer Properties > Ports tab.
  • If it’s set to WSD, change it to Standard TCP/IP Port (you may need to add it manually using the printer’s IP address from the Network Configuration Page).

4. Reinstall Using HP Easy Start (Not Just HP Smart)

HP Easy Start provides a more complete driver package:

5. Check Print Spooler Service

  • Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  • Scroll to Print Spooler, right-click > Restart.
  • Make sure its Startup Type is set to Automatic.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
