macOS 10.15 Catalina

Hello Everyone,  I have an HP Envy 7855 printer.  I am a MAC user and up until 2-3 years ago, I never had a problem with compatibility.  There had been a workaround fix but at that time, I had no way of using the workaround as I couldn't print and no other means of seeing the Apple work around.  Then my husband got an HP laptop and he had no problems of printing.  I am so baffled why I can't figure out why I cannot get my MAC back online with my printer.  I did try the Apple workaround but it was the same as it had been before the incompatibility because I had saved my sheets that someone else was able to print for me and it didn't work then and it doesn't work now.  Does anyone out there have a suggestion?  I can't keep using my husband to print out my stuff since he's not here all the time.  Thanks for help and suggestions.

Hi @LKC46,

Welcome to the HP Support Community

I'd like to help!

I understand you are unable to print from mac.

To assist better -

  1.  What's the application you are trying to print from? Have you tried printing from a different application or device?
  2. How is the printer connected to the device USB or wireless?
  3. Is there antivirus software installed on your Mac?

Let me know!

I am tryng to print from email, word and other Microsoft programs, pdf and trying to do it wireless.  My husband can print from his HP printer but I have not been successful since the error was found  last year.  I'm tired of sending everything to him to print and if he's not here, my reports are late getting mailed.  I am using Norton.

Let's try the below steps to see if that helps -

1.) Remove All Barriers: Certain building materials can get in the way of weaker signals like Bluetooth. Metal, bulletproof glass, concrete, and plaster are particularly bad, and marble, plaster and brick aren’t great easy. So if you’re really struggling with interference, your first step should be to move your Bluetooth devices away from these materials. That means no brick walls between you and your devices, and definitely no metal desks!

2.) Change Router Channel: If you have an Apple router and you’re constantly getting interference with your WiFi, try rebooting it. Upon restart, the station will search for a new channel. Specifically, a different channel than the one your Bluetooth devices is using to communicate. If you don’t have an Apple router, you may need to instead go into your router settings and try changing the channel manually. Experiment with different channels to see which one works best.

3.) Move Closer to Your Router: If you often find that you’re getting interference when talking on a wireless headset while on a WiFi call (you’ll know because you’ll hear static), try moving closer to your router. This will give you a more robust WiFi connection, so the Bluetooth frequency can’t overpower it.

4.) Get Away From Microwaves and Fluorescent Lighting: Both emit frequencies of 2.4GHz, and moving away from them will distance you from the source.

I'd like to know the following to isolate the issue further-

1.) Are the printer and Mac connected to the same network?

2.) Is your router dual-band enabled i.e., both 2.4GHz and 5GHz? If yes, make sure the dual band has different SSIDs for 2.4G and 5G networks.

3.) What is the distance between the router and the printer?

4.) Could you perform a ping test using the Mac Network Utility and let me know the results? Use the printer IP address to perform a ping test, the printer IP can be located by selecting the wireless icon on the printer display.

Perform a ping test to check the connectivity

1.        Obtain the IP address of the printer by clicking on the Wireless icon on the printer

2.        On the MAC Go to Spotlight > search for Network utility > select Ping tab > enter the IP address of the printer in the box

3.        Check the second box that says Send only > 10 pings

4.        Click on ping > Check the results at the end if any packets are lost

5.        Note: There should be 0% packet loss, share the results in your next post.

The wireless status menu on your Mac should also give us quite a lot of information that would help us identify the issue. You can press and hold option-click the WiFi icon and then use shift-command-5 to take the screenshot. Press the space bar when the icon turns into a camera. Share the ping test results and the screenshot with us.

Also, check with your Internet service provider if your router is able to forward 'Bonjour packets'.  Bonjour locates devices such as printers, other computers, and the services that those devices offer on a local network using multicast Domain Name System (mDNS) service records. The software comes built-in with Apple's macOS and iOS operating systems.

I have the same issue. None of these things work. I am not able to scan after the catalina update. So frustration how many hours I have spent trying to get it to work. I never had a problem at all in the many years of using this printer until now. Is there someone I can speak to? The virtual assistant is not helpful.

There are zero barriers, I do not have an apple router. there are zero microwaves or Fluorescent lights. My laptop nor my printer has moved. The only thing that changed was the catalina update.

They are on the same network., and there is no choice of 2.4G and 5G networks, there is just one.

I did a ping test and all 10 could not be found.

The HP utility can not locate the printer

Were you able to verify if the router can forward bonjour packets?

To prepare your printer for a wireless connection, restart the printer, computer, and router.

  1. Turn the printer off, and then wait 10 seconds.
  2. Disconnect the printer power cord from the printer.
  3. Turn off the computer or the device you are trying to print from.
  4. Connect the printer power cord to the printer, and then turn on the printer.
  5. Disconnect the power cord from your wireless router, and then wait 10 seconds.
  6. Reconnect the power cord to the router. Wait until Internet service is restored. Internet service is interrupted while the router is off.
  7. Turn on the computer.

Let me know how this goes!

Yes the router forwards bonjour packets.

Everything worked smoothly until I allowed the update of Catalina 10:15. After that, It has not worked well. Sometimes I can print, sometimes it can not locate the printer and most often I can not scan

  1. Are you using HP Smart or image capture to scan?
  2. Does the issue when printing using Apple AirPrint?

Let me know!

I have tried using the scan feature from my laptop (which is how I've always done it until now)

I have tried HP Easy scan.

It may work if I reset everything, and then a few hours later, it can not detect a printer to scan from. I've reset everything about 5-6 times and it doesn't seem right I am having to reset (and re-download) the printer to my laptop each time I need to scan or print. I appreciate your help

I have flagged my post twice with no response. I'm guessing there is no solution since I have not been getting a reply
