Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

I am very frustrated as my new HP MFP 4101fdw requires the admin password to print or scan. This is NOT the scan to email password for my email provider. This is when you select ANY activity on the printer you must enter the admin password. This is really stupid, this is a home small business computer. I had shut this off and now its back, I assume from a network firmware upgrade.

How do I shut this off so that my wife or I can print or scan without this annoying requirements

The printer feels locked behind a heavy door, its security settings demanding the sharp click of an admin password before any task can begin. A recent firmware update may have shifted the gears, resetting or altering those controls. To smooth the path and let printing and scanning flow freely without that barrier, you can adjust the settings as follows:

  1. Access the Printer's Embedded Web Server (EWS):

    • First, ensure that your printer is connected to the same network as your computer.
    • Find your printer's IP address. You can usually find this by printing a network configuration page or checking the printer display.
    • Open a web browser on your computer and enter the printer's IP address into the address bar. This opens the Embedded Web Server (EWS).
  2. Log in to the EWS:

    • Click on the "Sign In" button, typically at the top of the EWS page.
    • Enter the admin credentials. If the default credentials haven't been changed, try using defaults like "admin" for both username and password or look in the printer documentation for these details.
  3. Modify Security Settings:

    • Navigate to the "Security" tab or section within the EWS.
    • Look for features like "Access Control" or "Password Protection."
    • Adjust the settings to disable the admin password for printing and scanning tasks. This may involve deselecting options that enforce password protection for these functions.
  4. Save Changes:

    • After making the necessary adjustments, ensure you save the changes.
    • Restart the printer to ensure that the new settings are applied.
  5. Re-check Operation:

    • Try performing a task like printing or scanning to see if it no longer requires a password.

Once you’ve completed these steps, your printer should allow basic printing and scanning without requiring an admin password. Thank you for using the HP Support Community — we’re always here to help you keep your devices running smoothly.
