HP Smart Tank 7301 All-in-One
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Has anyone else had major, continual problems with the Smart Tank 7301? Talk about frustrations! I've always had HP printers, and always liked them, with ease of use, etc. I have contacted support several times, spent HOURS going through the troubleshooting guides, and usually manage to get it printing again, but not always. It may print one job, and a minute later refuse to print, even though nothing has changed.  It will say "printer ready" and not print, or it will say"offline" even though the wifi signal is on, and not blinking. I have not been able to get it to copy or scan, or print with a cable. Sometimes it will randomly print in B/W and not show an option for color printing. It seems like a glitch in the electronics and I can't get anyone from HP to acknowledge the problems. I have the same laptop I used with my last HP printer, and that one worked fine for years. The last agent I chatted with told me my ink cartridges were low- and it's a smart tank, that doesn't even have cartridges! When I tried to explain that (and the tanks are full, btw) she responded very rudely and unprofessionally. Sorry for the long post, but if others have had these problems, it would be useful to know how they were resolved.

@Moon_Glow, Welcome to the HP Support Community! I’m here to help.

I understand you are not able to print. Are you using the HP Smart app to print?

Print a Network Configuration Page to find important network settings such as network status and the printer IP address.

On the printer control panel, press and hold the Information button for five seconds to enable support mode.

All buttons on the control panel light up.

Press the Information button and Resume button simultaneously.

Install the printer using the TCP/IP port:

Check for any pending Windows updates first.

  1. On the PC, go to Control panel > Devices and printers > Remove the existing printer entry > click on Add a printer(at the top)
  2. Under 'Choose a device or printer', click on 'The printer I want isn't listed'.
  3. Select 'Add a printer using a TCP/IP address'.
  4. Find the IP address of the printer on the test report printed before.
  5. Type in the 'IP address in Hostname or IP address' box, click next
  6. Proceed to the next steps by following the on-screen instructions.
  7. Try printing in color. Open the File > Print.

Hope this helps! Let me know how it goes.

I hate this printer.  Does anyone have ANY ideas why I can't keep this HP Smart Tank 7301 connected to my network?  I recently updated to Windows 11.  I spend more time trying to get the printer to work than I actually spend working.  I am seriously thinking about switching brands. (And chunking this brand new printer in the trash.)

@Cyndi_Todd

I understand the printer is offline.

Did you try the steps mentioned in my previous post?

Let me know how it goes.

No, I'm sorry, your reply didn't solve any of the issues I mentioned. I also cannot make a simple copy... when I press the copy button, it does not do anything. How can I get that resolved?

Hi @Moon_Glow,

I understand you are not able to make a copy as well.

  • Are you using genuine HP ink cartridges?
  • Do you get any errors while copying?

While you respond to that, let's print a Print Quality Diagnostic page -Post the Print Quality Diagnostic page here so we can help you further.

You may also refer to this document with steps to fix the " Copy Quality Issues" issue applicable to your printer -  Resolve copy problems with HP printers

First of all, my printer is a smart tank- there are no cartridges. And yes, I am using HP ink to fill the tanks. And no, I don't get an error message. Nothing happens when I try to copy, it seems like the buttons don't work.

I bought my three months ago and it had never printed great. Now it is printing even worse. Spoke with support and was told it was the print head! A replacement will be sent out but will take two weeks!!! So, disappointed with the quality and support. Is HP addressing this at all?

With  my first 7301 I experienced paper jams, loss of connectivity, going offline, and some other issues. After six months of repeated communication with HP "support", they gave up and sent me  a replacement. I began having paper jams again, and after studying the identical appearance of the jams, I thought there was something in the paper path snagging the paper. I switched 20# to 24# paper and that solved that problem. I have used 20# paper for decades, and never had a problem. To this day I continue to have the problem of the printer going offline for no reason, and I am very likely going to replace this POS with an Epson.

My printhead failed at 5 months.  My printing went from normal to smeared garbage in an instant.  I teleconferenced with HP support and showed them that the black ink hose was empty and the black ink tank was full.  They are sending me a replacement printhead.  I now wish that I'd just stuck with a color laser all in one.
