Hi @Gall42,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The error message you're seeing on your HP 8710 printer, stating "Connect printer to update HP Instant Ink status" and the subsequent "cannot connect to server" error, generally indicates an issue with the printer's connection to the HP Instant Ink service. Here are some steps to troubleshoot and hopefully resolve this issue:

Check Internet Connection:

  • Ensure your printer is connected to the internet. You can test this by using the printer's built-in network settings to check the connection status.
  • Restart your router or modem if you suspect a network issue.

Reconnect Printer to Wi-Fi:

  • If there were any changes to your Wi-Fi settings (like SSID or password), reconnect your printer to the Wi-Fi network. You can do this from the printer’s control panel under the network settings.

Update Printer Firmware:

  • Outdated printer firmware can lead to connection issues. Check for firmware updates by going to the printer’s control panel and selecting the ‘Update’ option under the settings or help menus.

Check HP Instant Ink Account Status:

  • Log in to your HP Instant Ink account online to ensure there are no issues with your account, such as billing problems or service suspensions.

Restart the Printer:

  • Turn off the printer, wait about a minute, and then turn it back on. This can resolve temporary connectivity issues.

Check for HP Service Status:

  • Sometimes the issue might be with HP’s servers. Check online for any reports or service updates from HP that might indicate a problem on their end.

Manual IP Configuration (Advanced):

  • If your printer consistently fails to connect to your network, setting a static IP address might help. This can be configured through the printer’s network settings.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

am having the same problem and I have gone through all of the suggested steps at least 6 times and am still unable to print.

I had the same issue on Saturday.  At the printer's touch screen I deleted printer's email address then had it establish a new one.  But the overarching issue is it seems the instant ink server(s) were down Saturday evening because Sunday morning the printer connected  to the server and all is well.  I then renamed the email address back to what it was and the printer is as it was for the past eternity.  I believe the glitch was on HP's end, not my printer.  But try deleting the webservices info in the printer, including the email address and start over.

I find it interesting that there are several people that are having the same problem with their HP 8710 printer as myself. And even more so that it is happening around the same time. I have followed the advised steps at least 6 times over the weekend and I am still unable to print. Is my printer now obsolete? Am I able to bypass the instant ink connection and continue to print? I read a comment from a person who purchased a new 8710 printer and ink (outside of instant ink) and she is unable to print because her printer, she gets the same error message indicating that she has to connect with instant ink. Please advise.

See my post above.  I had same issue with my 8710 on Saturday.
Recommend you try this.  At the printer control screen, verify the printer has an email address.  It needs one in order to communicate with the instant ink server(s).  Mine did not, it somehow got lost after over 1 year with no problems.  Power outages and brief starts and stops perhaps.  Anyway, I deleted/stopped the webservices and had the printer initiate acquiring a new email address.  Then it still didn't connect so I went to bed, it was midnight.  Got up Sunday morning and it worked.  Check it out.
