HP OFFICEJET PRO 8710

Printer stopped being recognized by PC shown as inactive. Contacted HP support who could not fix. They connected me to Metaverse Techs llc who sold me a fake 8 year Norton 360 contract. I will reverse these charges on my credit card.

I don't know how you landed on a site that you thought was HP and the tech sent you to a Scam.

Doesn't matter -- there are thousands of scam-ish sites on the Internet.

Many of these sites look legitimate, claim on their mother's honor they are good people, and some claim to be HP.

Tricksters.

Sure -- and you are indeed scammed and should reverse the charges on your card.

Submit a fraud report to the appropriate authorities.

That said, I've sent your concerns to our Moderator team.

Should there be a response, look for a message here before the agent uses other meant to contact you.

I received a reply saying how did I get to Metaverse Tech from HP. I will tell you how. I received a report on the Smart Printing site that my printer was now not connected to my PC, even thought the printer showed the wireless was active.

I then ran the repair app on the HP site that failed to solve the problem. It recommended the HP virtual assistant. That tech could not  solve the problem and sent me this vendor. Somehow this vendor is connected to the HP smart printing system.

I did not contact them or receive an email from them. I was working from HP site.

I see in the forum that several people have had the same issue. It is not imagination.

Dragon Fur, I was not mentioning this unaffiliated site but HP itself.

I too was "connected" to Metavers via the HP support site.  When a support person CALLED ME with my contact info received from HP I assumed I was speaking to a legit HP tech.

Just to let you know, no one called these people they were automatically connected from the help assistant on the HP site to someone who said they were an HP employee.

If HP could provide a published solution to the problem of losing the connection to the printer and a recovery method it would help to end to situation. The HP diagnostic never provides a solution. I have used numerous versions of these printers for many years and have only had issues since smart printing was introduced.

I will gladly provide you details on those who have hacked into your site.

If the so-called HP tech support person takes over your screen while on the phone with you and starts pitching you on Malwarebytes, Norton 360 and Metaverse Techs LLC, end the session immediately.  I was told that that I didn't have a firewall in place and that there were a lot of "worms" infesting one of my computers.  The "HP tech support" person recommended a two year subscription to to Malwarebytes, described the plans they offered and said he would transfer my call to Metaverse, who would first install a firewall and then assist me in removing the malware.

The way he promoted all this seemed a bit odd, but got downright strange when he calculated that a two year plan to Malwarebytes, coupled with Metaverse, would cost $279 and then opened a PayPal window for me to pay. He said he could then have my printer installed within 20 minutes.  Foolishly, I went forward with it.  The "HP tech support" man said that he would finish the installation when the firewall was up and the malware cleaned out.

The next thing you know is a woman with a very Anglo name, but strong East Asian accent (which seemed grossly out of synch) is in control of my screen, using 7-Zip (freeware) to supposedly install the HP software.  In the later course of this I used another computer to set up my Malwarebytes account.  There was no such account and the online cost for two years was under $200.  When I asked about this, the woman brought someone else on the phone who said that Metaverse was the subscriber of record.   Nearly four hours later, the HP tech was gone for good.  The printer worked, but I was completely convinced this is a scam.

I asked to speak with a senior manager at Metaverse and told him I wanted to cancel my transaction and get a refund.  He assured me he would take care of it and that I would see an email confirming the cancellation and refund.  No such email has come.  I notified my bank and plan to report this to the appropriate oversight authority.  HP should be completely ashamed of how easily a customer can get sucked into this scam from outreach to HP itself.  Bad faith, bad business.
