HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw
macOS 12.0 Monterey

My printer is not scanning; however, still printing. I am getting an error message that the cable is not connected; however, it is in the port as well as the correct USB port. Should I try to update the Firmware? Yes, I did purchase a new printer cable and getting the same error message. The printer is setting on display that the scanning feature is not set up. What should I do?

Thanks,

Hi @MMAXILLE9,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw is giving you an error message that the cable is not connected, but it is still able to print, there might be an issue with the scanning functionality specifically. Here are the steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue:

1. Check Physical Connections:

  1. Ensure the Cable is Firmly Connected: Double-check that the USB cable is securely connected to both the printer and the computer.
  2. Try Different USB Ports: Connect the printer to a different USB port on your computer to rule out port issues.
  3. Test with Another Computer: If possible, connect the printer to another computer to see if the issue persists.

2. Update or Reinstall Printer Drivers:

  1. Go to HP Support: Visit the HP Customer Support website.
  2. Search for Your Printer: Enter your printer model (Color LaserJet Pro MFP M277dw) and download the latest drivers for your operating system.
  3. Install Drivers: Install the downloaded driver and restart your computer if necessary.

3. Update Printer Firmware:

  1. Visit HP Support: Go to the HP Customer Support website.
  2. Download Firmware Update: Search for your printer model and download the latest firmware update.
  3. Follow Installation Instructions: Follow the on-screen instructions to install the firmware update on your printer.

4. Verify Scanner Setup:

  1. Use HP Smart App: Download and install the HP Smart app from the HP website or app store.
  2. Set Up Scanner: Use the HP Smart app to set up and test the scanning functionality.

5. Check Scanner Settings:

  1. Open Scanning Software: Use the built-in scanning software on your computer (e.g., Windows Fax and Scan, Preview on Mac).
  2. Select the Correct Device: Ensure that your printer is selected as the scanning device in the software.
  3. Test Scan: Try performing a test scan to see if the issue persists.

6. Run HP Print and Scan Doctor:

  1. Download Tool: Download and install the HP Print and Scan Doctor from the HP support website.
  2. Run the Tool: Open the tool and follow the on-screen instructions to diagnose and fix any issues with the scanner.

7. Reset the Printer:

  1. Turn Off the Printer: Turn off the printer and disconnect the power cable.
  2. Wait for a Minute: Wait for at least one minute before reconnecting the power cable.
  3. Turn On the Printer: Turn on the printer and check if the scanning functionality is restored

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
