Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.
HP Recommended

The printer goes offline during the night. The display is blank (dark). When I send a print job, I get the "printer offline" message. I tap the screen to turn it on and it lights up, but the printer still does not print. Print Center says "looking for printer," but never finds it. I connect to the printer wirelessly. I'm not aware of anything I've changed to explain this problem. When I then turn the printer off and on, it prints the page without me having done anything but turn it off and on.

Hi @ProfessorDBT,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Your HP OfficeJet Pro 9020 series going offline overnight and showing a blank display is a common issue related to Sleep Mode, network settings, or power-saving features. Here’s how to fix it:

Why This Happens

  • The printer enters Deep Sleep or Auto-Off mode to save energy.
  • When asleep, it doesn’t respond to print jobs until fully woken up.
  • Wireless connection may drop during sleep, causing “Printer Offline” errors.

Recommended Fixes

1. Disable Auto-Off / Adjust Sleep Settings

  • On the printer:
    • Setup → Preferences → Energy Settings → Sleep Mode.
    • Set Sleep Mode to a longer time or disable Auto-Off.
  • In Embedded Web Server (EWS)
    • Enter printer IP in your browser → Settings → Energy Management.

2. Assign a Static IP

  • Dynamic IP changes overnight can cause offline issues.
  • In EWS:
    • Network → Wireless → Advanced Settings → Manual IP.
  • Or via the HP app:
    • Printer Settings → Advanced → IP Settings.

3. Keep Wi-Fi Active

  • Ensure Wireless Direct or Wi-Fi Always On is enabled.
  • Check router settings for DHCP lease time (set to 24 hours or more).

4. Update Firmware

5. Use HP App

  • Remove and re-add the printer in the HP app.
  • This refreshes the connection and resolves the offline status.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

Thanks for the help, but the "Energy Settings" and "Auto Off" settings you mentioned were not in the printer preferences or anywhere else I could find. When I tried to remove and reinstall the software using the HP Uninstaller, I got an error message (don't remember what it was). I unplugged the printer, waited, turned it on again, deleted it from Print Center, and then re-added it. It now seems to work. Fingers crossed!

Sorry to say it worked for another print job immediately after deleting and re-adding the printer to Print Center, but then Print Center says the printer is off-line. Other suggestions?
