My printer is printing strange characters instead of text.

My HP ENVY  6420e wi-fi printer has today started printing strange characters instead of text.

The printer is connected to my wi-fi. I print from my Notepad app or Microsoft Word on my laptop via HP Smart.

Instead of the simple text being printed I get pages of mostly blank and a few lines of strange characters.

I have tried switching off and on the modem and router, disconnecting and connect the power to the printer and restarted the laptop but the problem persists.

Any ideas as to how this problem can be resolved?

It seems like this problem exists only if I print to HP SMART!

Selecting the printer instead of HP Smart results in the text being printed instead of the gibberish.

So how to repair HP Smart?

I eventually uninstalled HP Smart and then downloaded and re-installed.

Now seems to be working correctly.
