The printer is connected to an internet enabled LAN, however the printer keeps trying to automatically download a software (presumably firmware) update, but fails. The message "The printer update could not be downloaded".
(Note that I am still able to send print jobs to the printer via the LAN).

Yes AntiVirus might block your Access to EWS page.
Please disable the AntiVirus Temporarily and assign a Manual IP Address
- Print a Network Config Page from the printer. Note the printer's IP address.
- Type that IP address into a browser to reveal the printer's internal settings.
- Choose the Networking tab, then Wireless along the left side, then the IPv4 tab.
- On this screen you want to set a Manual IP. You need to set an IP address outside the range that the router automatically sets (called the DHCP range). If you do not know the range, change the last set of numbers (those after the last '.') to 250
- Use 255.255.255.0 for the subnet (unless you know it is different, if so, use that)
- Enter your router's IP (on the Network Config Page) for the gateway.
- Enter 8.8.8.8 for the first DNS and 8.8.4.4 for the second DNS. This is Google DNS.
- Click 'Apply'. and close the page
Go back to the EWS Page again and try the update

Welcome to HP Support Community
I would like to help
Are you trying to update the Firmware directly from the printer control panel or are you downloading the Firmware from HP Website?
Thank you

Please try downloading the Firmware from this Link: https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/OJP9010/2115/OJP9010_2115A.exe

Hi, thanks for the link.
I've downloaded and run. The program correctly identifies the printer on the network to be updated but it is greyed out and I am unable to check the checkbox. I've refreshed but get the same result.

Please try the Firmware update from the EWS Page
1) Obtain the IP address of the printer – You can print a Network Configuration page to obtain the IP address.
2) Type the IP address on your web browser to obtain the printer EWS page on your computer.
3) Look for the option Update and check if that works ( The name & options might vary depending on models )
Meantime I will check with the concerned team regarding the Firmware update

Hi, thanks I've followed the 3 steps, however when I click "Check now" (for Printer updates), the "Checking for server connection and printer update...) bar appears, and after a bit of a wait I get "The printer could not connect to Web Services. Web Services might be busy or temporarily unavailable. Try again later." ...which I have done now on a number of occasions.
Another point to consider, my anti virus software (Kaspersky) gave me grief trying to enter EWS. I'm not sure if Kaspersky is blocking the EWS from accessing HP Web Services? The firewall on my PC is currently disabled FYI.
