If PC then make sure that Word and Excel have the M281 set as the default printer and NOT Microsoft pdf
Make sure the checkmark is on the printer and not the print to PDF
If you bring up Printers and Scanners you can set the default printer.
I might also suggest that you prevent windows from managing your printers. If you try to print a word document and the last printer you used was a label printer, windows will send the job to the label printer instead of the default printer if you are not careful. This happened to me and I had to unplug the label printer to stop it.
If you are using a smartphone and HP Smart for printing, you are limited to PDF.
if not using HP smart on (for example iPhone) then it is up to iOS as to what it can print.
