HP smart has not worked in weeks. Now my NP 4512 is not printing. My husband was able to print yesterday however today it is not printing despite my troubleshooting, restart, reboot, updated network setting however there were no changes; trial and error. I need assistance and no I do not want to purchase a new printer because there is no reason for this one not be working.

The printer is likely right at -- or close to -- nine years old.
True -- you should not replace tech that you wish to keep
It's helpful if that tech can still be supported.
Next,
You will likely recognize most of these --
If not, it might be time for a review of at least some of the highlights.
HP Collection of “Printer Cannot Print” Troubleshooting document links
Does not print / can’t print / won’t print / will not print / not printing
Next,
What you do next depends on what you have done, what you are willing to try, and your printing needs.
The following are likely not "new".
The ideas are offered with the understanding that you might have already tried one or more of the suggestions either on your own or during troubleshooting steps.
Ignore what you do not like, do not need, have already tried, are unwilling to do, or does not make sense in your situation...

| Connectivity (facet) | Apple AirPrint™; HP ePrint; Mopria™; USB; Wireless (Wi-Fi®); Wireless direct printing |
| Connectivity, Std | 1 Hi-Speed USB 2.0; 1 WiFi 802.11n\ |
What the printer can do ---
- The printer offers standard Wireless connection at 2.4GHz
- The printer supports Wireless Direct.
and
- The full driver software can tolerate a USB-only environment.
- Neither HP Smart nor its replacement HP App are suitable for a USB-only setup.
Next,
Ignore the mention of ePrint -- if still around, the service is at its sunset days and is not supported except by mention of the feature in the manuals and a few documents.
Wi-Fi Direct uses the wireless radio in your printer to connect directly to the Wireless on your device (computer, tablet, phone). While Wi-Fi Direct is useless for connecting the printer to the Internet (and, for example, Instant Ink or Cloud services), when it can be used, the limited connection does eliminate the chance that the issue is related to a weak, poorly located (perhaps too far away or even much too close), outdated, or incompletely configured, router.

What’s the difference between HP Wireless Direct and Wi-Fi Direct?
Wireless Direct printers must be connected manually.
Wi-Fi Direct printers can connect via manual, PIN, or push-button.
Both require a WPA2 password
Printer Name Convention
Wi-Fi Direct:
DIRECT-xx-HP [printer model name]
Wireless Direct:
HP-Print-xx-[printer model name]

Network Interface on / off, Network SSID name, Security Settings, Passphrase / Password
Select and connect to the correct SSID / network name for the bandwidth you are using.
Notes
- If your browser security will not allow you to open EWS, try a different browser.
- It is not mandatory that you use a manual / static IP address. Doing so can improve stability.
- If you assign a manual / static address on the printer, update your router to reflect the assigned IP address.
- EWS sections might be locked and require the printer’s PIN number to access. Find the printer’s default PIN inside the ink cartridge ink cartridge / area, or perhaps on the bottom or back of the printer. Check your printer’s User Guide first chapter for details – search the document for “ PIN “.

-- What about HP Smart? 2026 --
HP Smart has been replaced with the HP App.
I've included information about HP App later in this message.
HP Smart is not (or will will soon no longer be) available in the Microsoft Store
-- Important --
Be aware that there might be similarly named smart-ish apps listed in the Store -- If found, these are not HP Smart and should be treated as suspicious and possibly harmful. Two such fakes were recently removed from the Store by Microsoft. Fakes are like fleas, though, and new infestations might reappear. Stay vigilant.
You may use HP Smart as long as it serves. Because it cannot be reinstalled, do not uninstall HP Smart until you are done using it.
Next,
HP Smart was used to host the old HP Print and Scan Doctor.
-- Important –
May 2025
The HP Print and Scan Doctor should be removed.
-- Note --
- Ignore references to the HP Print and Scan Doctor in all documents.
AND
- You might have to chase down and remove the Doctor more than once if it is installed with older printer software.
-- Read and complete steps --
Excerpted
Remove HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)
Remove HP Print and Scan Doctor by deleting the desktop shortcut and application folders.
Open Windows File Explorer.
Click Desktop, and then delete the HP Print Scan Doctor shortcut if it exists.
In File Explorer, enter C:\HP\Diagnostics\PSDR in the address bar.
If the folder exists, delete it and all its contents.
In File Explorer, enter C:\Program Files (x86)\HP\Diagnostics\PSDR in the address bar.
If the folder exists, delete it and all its contents.

Things to Try
Software to check / reinstall
HP App
Router
Make sure your router is updated, capable, correctly configured, and properly placed with regard to signal strength. Check the router logs -- if the router is losing the printer's signal, the failures might be recorded in the logs.
Assigned IP Address (for full standard Wireless)
If you are not doing so, consider assigning the printer its own (static / manual) IP address. While not strictly necessary, an assigned IP Address can improve stability and provides a way for the printer to find its way back onto the network should the connection be lost. The manual address should be assigned on both printer and router.
Check your Windows Updates history -- Windows Updates have a tendency to take a walk-about on printer software. Not every time, of course, the it can happen. The usual solution is to uninstall / reinstall the printer's full driver printer software and then recheck all the places where the driver is called or needed.
The full driver printer software is still available. Even should you decide you do not need to reinstall the printer software this time, do consider downloading and saving the software installation package for another time When HP determines the printer is "retired" (somewhere around ten years), all software, documentation, and service files for the printer are removed from the HP archives.
↓ Hints ↓
The Offline Use Only, Print and Scan Driver, or similarly named installation web packs can be used in either a network‑connected or USB‑connected environment.
The name of the installation file depends on the printer model and the type of packaging.
This method includes the printer software in the installation package; hence the much larger file size.
You need not answer questions about which driver or type of printer software to select and install.
Using USB?
Be sure to unplug the USB cable between the printer and the computer before loading the software.
Re-connect the USB cable when instructed to do so, generally near the end of the successful installation of the printer software.

The following are important.

Each can impact one or more print or scanning operations.
If you have been chasing this problem for awhile, you know this is not a complete list --
It does touch on some of the high-lights.

-- Windows --
If the "problem" surfaced directly after an update -- or possibly even if no updates were applied -- check the Default Printer and the Printer Properties Driver assignments -- ensure the settings are as expected and needed.

Next,
Neither the older HP Smart application nor its replacement app, HP, are suitable for a USB-only setup.
Should it work at all, many of the features of the app will be missing or curtailed.

HP App >>> Download / Install - How-to, FAQ, Troubleshooting
HP -- the company -- has named the new application for your HP computer and HP Printer → HP
<< Important -- 2026 >>
- HP has replaced the HP Smart application with the HP App on all supported platforms.
- The HP App is available at the App Store for your supported device (computer, tablet, phone).

- HP is a sort of app-wrapper and includes both your HP computer and any HP Printers that have been detected or added to the HP App.
- HP Smart -- the application for used for scan, print, shortcuts, and mobile fax, is now parked inside of the HP App Printer section.
