HP Smart Tank 7602 All-in-One

I just updated HP Smart on my iPhone running 18.6.2 to the HP App. Now all 4 of my printers show up as only "Printer 1", Printer 2", etc.  Although one of them also shows the Bonjour name in the Product Information window when that printer is selected to view, I can't find a way to change the top-level name from "My Printer 4" to show the Bonjour name. How can I get this to change? This was a mistake to change the way the App identifies printers.

Edit: HP App version 20;

I thought I had found a workaround by signing in to my HP account on my MAC in my office and going to the Dashboard. It showed all 4 of my printers (different levels of the Smart Tank 7600 series) and when I clicked on the "check" by the name of the printer, I got the option to edit the Nickname of each printer. While it saved the new name in my account, now visible on the Dashboard, when I open the HP app on my iPhone it still uses the default "My Printer #" as the nickname. I've restarted the phone 3 times, I've logged out of the account on the MAC and logged back in, but to no avail!

Edit: 10-31-25

I just got off the phone with HP Support - there is no way to change the printer names that display when you open the app (My Printer, My Printer 2, My Printer 3, etc.) They have no idea if or when this issue might be resolved. This is an inefficient change that was made to the app; having to dive into each printer setting to find which printer to use!

Hi @gooddad56

Welcome to the HP Support Community! We're here to help you get back up and running.

I'm really sorry the HP App isn’t showing your custom printer names—it’s frustrating when something that used to work smoothly now feels less intuitive. While the Bonjour name appears in the product details, the top-level display names like “My Printer 1” remain fixed in the app’s current version.

What You Can Try to Improve Printer Identification in the HP App (iOS)

1. Rename Printers via HP Account Dashboard

You’ve already done this, and it’s a great step. Renaming printers at the account level should sync across devices—but unfortunately, the HP App version 20 on iOS doesn’t currently reflect those nicknames in the main printer list.

  • Visit: HP Account Dashboard
  • Sign in and go to My Printers
  • Click the checkmark next to each printer to edit its nickname
  • These names will appear in the dashboard and may sync with other platforms (e.g., HP App on Windows or macOS)

2. Use Bonjour Name as a Visual Identifier

While the top-level name remains generic, the Bonjour name shown in the Product Information window can help you distinguish printers.

  • Open the HP App
  • Tap each printer > Settings > Product Information
  • Note the Bonjour name and match it to your physical printer

3. Check for App Updates

HP may refine this behavior in future versions.

  • Open the App Store on your iPhone
  • Search for HP App
  • Tap Update if available

4. Use HP App on Mac or Windows for Better Labeling

If you’re printing from a desktop, the HP App on macOS or Windows may show nicknames more clearly.

Let me know if you'd like help organizing your printers by IP address or Bonjour name to make selection easier. Once the app updates or sync behavior improves, your nicknames should become more visible and intuitive again.

Hello Hawks_Eye,

I have tried all 4 proposed solutions but none have worked. Hopefully when I  get the notification for another HP app update, it will include a fix for this situation.

I have also tried accessing my printers via any browser and the IP address but so far the  EWS dashboard has not shown up. Even though the WiFi connection gives an IP address, for some reason the browser hangs up.

Thanks anyway.

You are very welcome @gooddad56

I'm truly sorry the HP App on iOS isn’t reflecting your custom printer names—it’s frustrating when something that used to feel intuitive now forces extra steps just to identify your devices. While the Bonjour name helps inside the settings, the top-level display remains locked in the current version.

Here’s what you can try to improve printer identification until the app behavior changes:

1. Use Bonjour Name as a Reliable Identifier

Since the HP App version 20 doesn’t show nicknames at the top level, rely on the Bonjour name inside each printer’s settings.

  • Open the HP App on your iPhone
  • Tap each printer > Settings > Product Information
  • Note the Bonjour name and match it to your physical printer
  • You can also label your printers physically to match the Bonjour name for quick reference

2. Access the Embedded Web Server (EWS) via IP

If the browser hangs when accessing the IP, try these adjustments:

  • Use Safari or Chrome on your iPhone or Mac
  • Enter the IP address directly in the address bar (e.g., http://192.168.1.105)
  • Ensure the printer and device are on the same Wi-Fi band (preferably 2.4 GHz)
  • Temporarily disable VPN or firewall settings that may block local IP access
  • If the page still doesn’t load, try accessing from another device on the same network

Once inside EWS, you may be able to rename the printer or confirm its Bonjour broadcast name.

3. Check for HP App Updates Regularly

HP may refine this behavior in future releases.

  • Open the App Store on your iPhone
  • Search for HP App
  • Tap Update if available
  • Restart the app and check if nicknames sync

4. Use HP App on macOS or Windows for Better Labeling

The desktop versions may show nicknames more clearly and allow easier printer management.

  • Visit the HP App for Windows and macOS
  • Sign in and check if nicknames appear correctly
  • Use this platform for renaming and organizing your printers more effectively

Let me know if you'd like help organizing your printers by IP address or Bonjour name to make selection easier. Once the app updates or sync behavior improves, your nicknames should become more visible and intuitive again.

This lack of HP Printer naming ability in the HP Printer App is a major design flaw and creates much confusion if you have multiple printers in multiple locations. HP really needs to address this issue in future HP Printer App versions.
