Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.

My printer is no longer apart of the instant ink program and is no longer connected to the internet it once was. I continue to get messages on the printer stating, "connect printer to update Instant Ink Status." Do I really need to reconnect it to the previous Wi-Fi  for the update?

Hello,

I’ll explain why this happens and what you can (and cannot) do depending on the printer type.

Why the message keeps appearing

Even though your printer is no longer enrolled in Instant Ink:

  • The printer still has Instant Ink mode stored internally

  • It periodically tries to “phone home” to HP

  • When it can’t reach the internet, it shows:

“Connect printer to update Instant Ink Status”

This is expected behavior on Instant Ink–capable printers and does not mean:

  • You’re still being billed

  • The printer is broken

It just means the printer has not been told to exit Instant Ink mode.

Important distinction (this decides the solution)

There are two categories of HP printers:

🔹 Category A: Older / non-“e” printers

  • OfficeJet Pro 8600 / 8700 series

  • Envy 5000 / early 6000 series

  • Some DeskJet models

➡️ These can be taken fully out of Instant Ink mode.

🔹 Category B: “e” or newer cloud-locked printers

  • Models ending in e

  • Most Envy 6000e / 6400e

  • DeskJet 2700e / 4100e

  • OfficeJet Pro 9000e series

➡️ These require periodic internet contact by design, even after Instant Ink cancellation.

So I need to be honest here: on some models, the message cannot be permanently disabled without reconnecting once.

What you can do (model-independent steps)

Step 1 – Confirm Instant Ink is cancelled (online)

Make sure:

  • Your HP Instant Ink account shows the printer as Cancelled

  • No active plan remains

(This prevents billing — the message is unrelated to charges.)

Step 2 – Temporary fix (works on ALL models)

If you briefly reconnect the printer to any internet connection (not necessarily the old Wi-Fi):

  • The printer syncs status

  • The message usually disappears for a long time (weeks/months)

👉 This can be:

  • A phone hotspot

  • A friend’s Wi-Fi

  • Any working network

It does not have to be the original network.

Step 3 – Permanent fix (ONLY for non-“e” printers)

If your model supports it:

  1. Perform a full factory reset

  2. Set the printer up without HP Smart

  3. Do not re-enable web services / Instant Ink

  4. Use:

    • USB connection, or

    • Basic network setup (no HP account)

This removes Instant Ink prompts entirely.

⚠️ This does not work on “e” printers.

What you cannot do (important)

  • You cannot disable Instant Ink prompts via a menu toggle

  • You cannot silence it without at least one sync on some models

  • You cannot bypass cloud checks on “e” printers

  • Replacing cartridges does not stop the message

This is a design limitation, not a fault.

Bottom line (clear answer)

  • You do NOT need the old Wi-Fi

  • You may need one brief internet connection to clear the status

  • On some newer models, the message is unavoidable without periodic internet
