Common problems for Connectivity Issues
We would like to share some of the most frequently asked questions about Printer Wi-Fi, Connectivity Issues and Offline Status. Check out this link: HP printer is offline or unavailable.
HP Recommended

My Office Jet Pro 8740 with a static IP loses wired ethernet connectivity (if stays connected over WiFi). Wired connectivity can be restored by turning the printer off/on, but it will lose wired connectivity again after an hour. This is the only printer--I have several--with this problem, and it has been a problem since the printer was new. I can use the printer over Wifi, but I would prefer a stable, wired connection.

Hi @gkarasik1,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

I understand that you are facing connectivity issues. I’d like to help!

When your OfficeJet Pro 8740 printer consistently switches from a wired connection to wireless, there are a few steps you can take to address this issue:

Check Cable Connections: Ensure that the Ethernet cable connecting the printer to your network router or switch is securely plugged into both the printer and the router/switch ports. A loose connection could cause intermittent disconnections.

Printer Settings: Access the printer's control panel or settings menu. Look for network settings or connectivity options. Disable the wireless connection if it's enabled, and prioritize the wired (Ethernet) connection.

Network Configuration: Check your router's settings. Make sure the printer's IP address is reserved or static. This ensures the printer consistently gets the same IP address, preventing connection disruptions.

Update the firmware by selecting the current OS. Click here

Reset Network Settings: Consider resetting the printer's network settings to default and reconfigure the wired connection from scratch. This can sometimes resolve persistent connectivity problems.

Printer Troubleshooting: Use the printer's built-in troubleshooting tools or diagnostic tests to identify specific network-related issues. These tools might provide insights into what's causing the connection switches.

If the issue persists, contact HP phone support via remote assistance.

Thank you for taking time to respond. I have failed to explain the problem clearly. The 8740 does not "switch to wifi" Though I would prefer using ethernet, I have switched to wifi because when connected via ethernet (static IP), the 8740 regularly loses connectivity after a half-hour or so. The symtoms are consitent with the ethernet port going into hybernation; turning the printer off/on reconnects with the network, but this is not a viable long-term solution. The 8740's EWS power-management options provide only for choosing a 5, 10, or 15 minute sleep mode and scheduling. (I have chosen 5 minutes, and scheduling  is disaled.) The wifi connection is unaffected by power management, which is why I am using it. In trouble-shooting, I have already upgraded the firmware and reconfigured the ethernet both with different static IPs and reserved DHCP IPs. The loss of ethernet connectivity persists.

Hi @GaryKarasik,

Thanks for clarifying in detail.

Let's perform a semi-full reset to restore the printer back to its original settings and see if that works.

The reset instructions are specific to your printer and performing those steps on a different printer may brick the device.

I've sent you a private message with reset instructions, follow the reset instructions to perform a full reset and re-initialize the printer.
