HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My printer says that everything is "locked" by the person that set it up. I am the person that set it up and I did not lock anything. I am now not able to reset it to factory settings because everything is locked. I have unplugged it and replugged back in, used the support resources, reset my internet and still nothing. The only button my printer has is a power button. Any ideas?

Hi @skinrenewdayspa,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

I can imagine how frustrating this feels. Being locked out of your own printer settings is like having the door to your house locked from the inside! The HP OfficeJet Pro 8715 uses an Administrator Lock feature that can restrict access to menus, including factory reset options. Here’s how to fix it:

Why This Happens

  • The printer was set up with Administrator Settings enabled (possibly during initial setup or via HP Smart/EWS).
  • If you forgot the admin password or the lock was applied unintentionally, the printer will gray out most options.

Recommended Fixes

Step 1: Check for Admin Password

  • If you set an admin password in the Embedded Web Server (EWS), you’ll need it to unlock settings.
  • Access EWS by typing the printer’s IP address in your browser.
  • Log in as Administrator (default password is usually blank unless changed).

Step 2: Disable Administrator Lock

  • In EWS:
    • Go to Settings > Security > Administrator Settings.
    • Uncheck Control Panel Lock or Menu Lock.
    • Apply changes.

Step 3: Hard Reset (If Password Unknown)

  • Power off the printer.
  • Disconnect the power cord for 60 seconds.
  • While plugging it back in, press and hold the Power button + Cancel button for 15 seconds.
  • This often triggers a semi-reset that clears lock settings.

Step 4: Full Factory Reset via Hidden Menu

  • On the printer touchscreen:
    • Tap HomeBackHomeBack quickly (service menu).
    • Navigate to Reset Menu > Full Reset. (This may require admin access if the lock persists.)

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
