HP OfficeJet Pro 9120r All-in-One Series
Microsoft Windows 11

Howdy.

I have this brand new OfficeJet Pro 9120r that will not connect or try to find the wifi and/or bluetooth.  I've done EVERYTHING listed to solve this problem.  I'm becoming pretty frustated and cannot for the life of me wonder why it's not working.  What I have done:

1. The WiFi router is about 15 inches away from the printer.  So it can't be the distance.

2. The screen on the computer only shows the QR code with the instructions to install the HP software.

3. I have downloaded the HP app on my phone and the HP Smart thing on my BRAND NEW HP desktop.

4. I have made sure my bluetooth is on.

5. I have made sure that I've connected my phone, my BRAND NEW HP desktop to my WiFi router.

6. Opened up the Printers and Devices to add printer on my BRAND NEW HP desktop - IT DIDN'T WORK.

6a. Opened up the Bluetooth section on my BRAND NEW HP desktop - IT DIDN'T WORK

7. I tried using the app on my phone to connect to the HP app to add the printer.  IT DIDN'T WORK.

8. I tried using the desktop HP Smart program to connect to add the printer.  IT DIDN'T WORK.

9. I turned off the printer and unplugged the plug from the printer as well as the wall and waited.  I plugged it all back in. The white light is solid.  The blue light keeps blinking.  The screen on the printer just shows the same thing - the QR CODE WITH INSTRUCTIONS ON SETTING UP THE PRINTER.  It didn't work.

10. I uninstalled the HP smart app on the computer and then restarted.

11. It restarted, I installed the HP smart program on the computer and we're back to ground zero.  IT DIDN'T WORK.

12. I unistalled my HP app from the phone.  I restarted.

13.  It restarted, I reinstalled the HP app on my phone.  IT DIDN'T WORK.

15. I double checked my WiFi, made sure I wasn't on another network or something weird. IT DIDN'T WORK.

16. I checked windows update and everything was up to date.  SO THAT DIDN'T WORK.

17. I double checked the Bluetooth.  I was able to sync my Bose mini player to bluetooth and this device is older than the printer so THAT DIDN'T WORK.

PS: I also tried adding the printer by using the IP address.  IT DIDN'T WORK. OHHHH and

19. I also unplugged and replugged back in my router to reset.  IT DIDN'T WORK.

What else, besides paying $16.99 per month for a HP smart friend or $99.99 for a one problem answer from same smart friend, am I missing?

Thanks ever so much.

Lori

Hi there @DallasStarsLori, and welcome to HP Support Community!

Thank you for reaching out with your concern. I'm glad to assist you today.

Based on your detailed description, it sounds like your HP OfficeJet Pro 9120r is stuck in the initial setup loop and unable to connect to Wi-Fi or Bluetooth. The blinking blue light confirms that Wi-Fi is enabled but not connected to a network. Here's a step-by-step guide to resolve this issue:

Reset the Printer’s Network Settings

This clears any corrupted or incomplete setup attempts.

  • On the printer screen showing the QR code, press and hold the back button (⟵) for 5 seconds.
  • Tap Settings > Network Settings > Restore Network Defaults.
  • Confirm the reset. The printer will restart and the blue light will blink slowly again.

Use HP Smart App for Setup

HP+ printers require setup via the HP Smart app. USB setup is not supported.

  • Download the HP Smart app from 123.hp.com or your device’s app store.
  • Enable Bluetooth and Location Services on your phone or PC.
  • Open HP Smart and sign in or create an HP account.
  • Tap “Set up a new printer”. The app should detect the printer via Bluetooth.
  • Follow the on-screen steps to connect to Wi-Fi and complete setup.

If the printer is not detected:

  • Ensure your phone/PC is on the same Wi-Fi network.
  • Move the printer closer to the router (you already have it 15 inches away, which is great).
  • Restart the HP Smart app and try again.

Use HP’s Diagnose & Fix Tool (Windows/macOS)

If setup still fails, run HP’s built-in troubleshooter:

  • Open the HP Smart app on your PC.
  • Go to Printers > Diagnose & Fix or scroll to Diagnostics > Diagnose and Fix.
  • Click Start and follow the instructions. This tool can fix:
    • Network connection issues
    • Driver mismatches
    • Offline printer status

Try Wi-Fi Direct (Temporary Workaround)

If network setup fails, use Wi-Fi Direct to print without a router:

  • On the printer, go to Settings > Wi-Fi Direct and enable it.
  • Connect your phone or PC to the printer’s Wi-Fi Direct network (e.g., HP-Print-9120r-XXXX).
  • Use HP Smart or your OS’s print dialog to print.
