HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e All-in-One Printer

I have a new HP 9120e printer (Fall 2024) and it keeps going offline. I have tried the suggestions offered, but the issue does not resolve. I tried updating the firmware, but my printer doesn't stay online long enough to connect. I have strong WIFI and my MacBook Pro has OS Sonoma 14.6.1. Both my printer and laptop are connected under the same WIFI.

@steph418,

Welcome to HP Support Community,

Thank you for posting your query; I’m here to help by guiding you through steps to resolve this issue

Check Printer's Network Connection

Reset the printer’s network connection:

  • On your printer’s display screen, go to Settings > Network Setup > Wireless Setup Wizard. Reconnect the printer to your Wi-Fi network, ensuring that the printer is on the correct network.
  • Verify that it is connected to the correct network (check the Wi-Fi signal strength on the printer’s display).

Check IP Address:

  • Print a network configuration page by pressing Home > Setup > Network > Print Network Configuration (the exact path may vary). Make sure that the printer has a valid IP address, and it is not a conflict with another device on the same network.
  • Make sure the printer’s IP address is static (or reserved via your router’s settings) to avoid it changing, which could cause it to go offline.

Check the MacBook Pro Connection

  • Reboot Wi-Fi and reconnect: Turn off your MacBook’s Wi-Fi and then turn it back on. Reconnect to the same Wi-Fi network as the printer.
  • Forget and re-add the printer:
    1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    2. Find your printer and click the minus (-) sign to remove it.
    3. Add the printer back by clicking the plus (+) sign and selecting it from the list.

Reinstall the Printer Driver

  • Ensure that the correct driver is installed for macOS Sonoma 14.6.1.
    1. Remove and reinstall the printer driver:
      • Visit HP's official website and download the latest drivers for your HP OfficeJet Pro 9125e, ensuring they are compatible with macOS Sonoma.
    2. Reinstall the printer driver by following the on-screen instructions.
  • Use AirPrint: If the driver installation doesn't work, try setting up your printer through AirPrint, which should automatically work with macOS and bypass the need for a specific driver.

Use a Static IP Address

Assign a static IP to your printer to ensure it doesn’t change when the printer is rebooted or disconnected from the network.

  1. On your router, access the DHCP reservation or static IP reservation settings (this varies by router).
  2. Find your printer's MAC address (you can find this in the network configuration page or on the back of the printer).
  3. Reserve an IP address for it so it doesn’t change over time.

Reset the Printer to Factory Settings

If the printer keeps going offline despite all steps, a factory reset could help resolve network issues:

  1. Factory Reset:
    • On the printer, navigate to Settings > Printer Maintenance > Restore > Restore Factory Defaults. Follow the on-screen instructions to reset the printer.
    • After resetting, reconnect the printer to the Wi-Fi network via the Wireless Setup Wizard.

Update Printer Firmware via HP Smart App (if Wi-Fi is stable for a moment)

If your printer stays online just long enough:

  1. Open the HP Smart app on your MacBook.
  2. Click on the printer icon and select Manage.
  3. Check for any firmware updates and apply them.

Check Router Settings

  • Wi-Fi Channel: Some printers have trouble connecting to routers that use certain Wi-Fi channels. In your router settings, try switching between 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz or manually selecting a channel that doesn’t conflict with other devices.
  • Enable Multicast or UPnP: Some routers have a setting for multicast or UPnP (Universal Plug and Play) which may help with device discovery and maintaining a steady connection.

Disable Sleep Mode on Printer

  • Some printers may go offline due to power-saving settings. Make sure the printer's sleep mode is set to a longer duration or turned off.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (for Windows, but useful diagnostics)

  • Although you're on a Mac, HP's Print and Scan Doctor for Windows can be helpful in identifying issues if you have access to a Windows PC. It may pinpoint connectivity problems that apply to your MacBook as well.
