My printer communicates and receives a print job but will not print.

Hi @Payson53,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

I understand that the printer receives the print job but does not actually print it.

To narrow this down, could you please provide the following details?

The exact HP printer model.

Are you using Windows or macOS?

Is the printer connected by Wi-Fi, Ethernet, or USB?

When you send the job, does it remain in the print queue, disappear from the queue, or show an error?

Do you see any error message or blinking lights on the printer?

Can the printer make a copy directly from its control panel (if it has a copy function)?

If the job is stuck in the queue, it's recommended to check the queue for paused/offline status and use Diagnose & Fix in the HP app, which can clear stuck jobs and address common spooler or connection issues.

Once you provide the model and the above details, we can narrow down the issue without unnecessarily repeating troubleshooting steps.

Best regards,

HP 7740, MacOS,WiFi, the job goes to the print queue and says printing, there is a ? on the left, I can print a page from the control panel,  You said that I can go in the HP app and diagnose and fix in the app.  I don't see where or how to do that.  The app asks for the IOS and it says it detected IOS 18 x.  Now what do I do?

Hi @Payson53,

Thank you for confirming. Since your HP OfficeJet 7740 can print a page directly from the printer, the printer itself is responding, so the issue appears to be with the Mac print queue or printer connection.

For the ? icon and the job remaining at “Printing,” please try this first:

Open System Settings > Printers & Scanners.

Select your HP OfficeJet 7740.

Click Printer Queue.

If the job is paused, select it and click Resume. If it is stuck, cancel/delete the job and try printing again.

You can also run Diagnose & Fix in the HP app. HP confirms this tool is available on macOS:

Open the HP app.

Select your OfficeJet 7740.

Look for Diagnose & Fix under the printer or Diagnostics section.

Select Start and allow it to complete.

The message about detecting iOS 18.x is likely referring to the mobile operating system, not your Mac. Since you are using macOS, you don't need to proceed based on the iOS detection.

If the "?" remains next to the 7740 and the job still stays at “Printing,” let me know what you see when you open Printer Queue, particularly whether the printer is shown as Paused, Offline, or Unavailable.
