Out of the blue I get a paper size error when printing from iPhone or iPad. I have tried all the tips from other posts (from2019) including calling Apple. I’m using hp smart have powered down, install uninstall printer with no luck. Help! I’m don’t want to have to buy a new printer but I rarely use my pc so not printing from iPad is a big inconvenience

move done everything below

I understand that you are not able to print on a regular paper from your iOS devices. In order to isolate the issue, I would want you to try using the HP Smart App to print from. Refer to the document HP Printers - Install and Use the HP Smart App (Android, Apple iOS) for help.

Also, try the steps below-

  1. On the printer control panel, touch the Wireless icon (

    ).

The network and IP address information displays.

  2. Type the printer's IP address into a web browser address bar.

Figure : Example of an IP address in web browser address bar

    The printer's EWS page displays.

  3. From the printer's EWS page, click the Settings tab.

Figure : Example of an EWS Settings tab

  4. Under Preferences, click Paper Settings.

  5. Under Default Media Size, click the drop-down menu, and then select the desired media size.

    NOTE:

The default paper size for Apple AirPrint is 4×6 inches. Make sure that the Paper Settings on the printer's EWS page match the paper size settings on the Apple device.

Figure : Example of an EWS Paper Settings menu

    NOTE:

Changing the Default Media Size affects future print jobs. It might be necessary to change the Default Media Size when printing documents that are not the same size as the documents you are printing with Apple AirPrint.

Hope this helps! Keep me posted.

Welcome to the HP Community Forum.

It's tough when you "have tried all the tips from other posts ".

It's harder to know what to offer --

Following are some ideas - Ignore anything you've already tried.

Start...

This printer was introduced early to mid-2009.

The printer might be right on the edge of not being supported by HP Smart.

That said, sure - keep using HP Smart as long as it works...

At this writing, the printer is still listed as supporting HP Smart in the Mobile Printing document.

Information is FYI only and is not meant to provoke worry.

Reference - for those reading - Is your printer supported by HP Smart?

Mobile Printing – Options for Printers

Start here

Print from your Android, iOS, or Amazon Fire device with the HP Mobile printing app.

Open the section for your printer series  >  Find your printer and supported applications.

Next,

You did not say what paper size and paper type you are using -  although this might not make any difference, it does mean that answers will be necessarily non-specific.

=====================================================================

The last part of your message seems to be a copy of instructions to check / adjust the paper size and type using the Embedded Web Server > EWS .

If you have not done so,

Open printer tray drawer > Remove the paper from the tray

Flex (do not fan the paper)  > Replace the paper > Close tray drawer

Next,

Immediately update / enter the paper size / type information in the Printer Control Panel

OR

Use EWS to update the information

For those reading, a reminder:

Reminder:

Tray 2, an optional device, only supports plain paper and might restrict the paper size and type, too.

Open the EWS Preferences to check which tray supports which media.

Media Size (facet)Letter; A4; Legal; B5

=======================================================================================

Next,

Make sure every device that is running HP Smart is running the latest version of the app for that platform.

If you are running HP Smart of the PC, make sure it is current, too (even if you are not using it).

Next,

If you have not done so,

Try / Consider:

After having uninstalled HP Smart from the iPad / iPhone > Restarted device > "Get" a new copy of the app...

Restart everything, including the router that controls your network -- leave the router off for about 15 seconds when you shut it down > Boot router, let it completely restart > Start other devices (including the printer, too, of course).

=======================================================================================

Next,

If you have not done so,

Try / Consider:

Make sure the printer is plugged into a wall outlet (as opposed to a surge protector, for example).

Complete Step 2 in this document

Printer Turns Off Unexpectedly or Repeatedly

=======================================================================================

What else?

Not sure -- there is, as you know, only "so much" to be done.

Thinking on it...

Thanks for the above suggestions. When I am on EWS>settings >preferences>paper handling

it only shows tray usage-default tray and tray lock.
I am trying to print letter size on regular paper,

not sure if this is helpful but when I go to web services setup on printer control panel, it says printer unable to connect to server, but to connect it says I can enter a proxy server. I don’t even know what that is.
I have tried all of your suggestions

thanks

Also, there is no where that I have found on printer control panel or hpsmart or hp website to put in default paper size. It only shows up when going to print something. If I choose any size but 4x6 I get paper size error only on apple products not pc windows

Yes, Web Services can impact your experience.

Your printer is not on the list of printers that no longer support Web Services (that is good).

So, sure - Web Services should work.

On the other hand, Web Services can go down in one region and be working in another.

Even when supported (printer can use Web Services, the service can be down for a few minutes or for days.

No, we do not have ANY visibility that allows us to know what is going on.

None, Zilch, Na-da.

Might as well be an undiscovered Black Hole.

November 2020 or earlier > Read Web Services Notice

Printer list -- No more Web Services for these printers

Side Note:

You do not need an entry for Proxy unless you are using a Proxy server.

If you don't know that that is, you are not using one.

If I think of anything else, I will post back.

Thanks again but still no luck. I was able to find a paper setting on hp on pc, don’t ask me where I’ve checked so many places. Unfortunately it has made no difference. It’s just not practical to print only 4x6 from iPhone. If I get tired of printing from pc only, I might have to break down and upgrade my printer.
