I thought I canceled my monthly subscription but it looks like it said I can’t print unless I pay?? Is that true?

Hi A513

Here is a breakdown of what happens when you cancel and what you need to do to start printing again:

1. The Instant Ink Cartridges Stop Working

HP Instant Ink works on a subscription model where you pay for pages printed, not for the ink itself. The cartridges provided by the service remain the property of HP and are remotely monitored.

  • Deactivation: When your subscription is canceled, the printer communicates with HP's servers (usually at the end of your current billing cycle). HP then remotely disables the Instant Ink cartridges currently in your printer, even if they are still full.

  • The Error Message: The error message you are seeing likely means those subscription-based cartridges have been remotely locked and will no longer allow the printer to function until they are replaced.

2. How to Start Printing Again (The Solution)

To resume printing, you must install new, retail-bought cartridges that are not tied to the Instant Ink program.

A. Replace ALL Cartridges

  1. Remove All Instant Ink Cartridges: Take out every single cartridge that was sent to you by the Instant Ink service, regardless of how much ink is left.

  2. Purchase New Retail Cartridges: Buy a complete set of standard Original HP cartridges from a regular retailer (store or online). These cartridges will be labeled as standard or XL, not as Instant Ink.

  3. Install Them: Install the new, retail-purchased cartridges into your printer.

Once the printer detects a full set of non-Instant Ink cartridges, it should clear the error and allow you to print normally again, paying for ink as you buy it in stores.

B. Check Your HP Account Status

Make sure the cancellation is finalized and that you are not being charged for any past-due pages.

  • Log into your HP Instant Ink account on the HP website.

  • Confirm the status is listed as "Cancelled."

You may also want to consider disabling Web Services on your printer, as this is the feature that allows the printer to communicate with HP's servers and monitor the cartridges. The method varies by model, but you can usually find this option in the printer's on-screen menu under "Setup," "Web Services," or the ePrint section.

The key takeaway is that the printer is not broken; the cartridges you currently have installed were simply deactivated because they are tied to a service you are no longer paying for.

I hope the above is helpful
