I have a HP OfficeJet 8022e. It works fine.. but I wanted to enable "Print anywhere".

It's greyed out in the HP app... and says 'Disabled'.

How do I get it to work?

Thanks

Welcome to the HP Community --

Print Anywhere is a premium remote print service provided when you activate HP+.

Should it still be possible to activate HP+ on your older printer model -- and before you go forward -- be sure that's what you want to do.

Print Anywhere is available when HP+ is enabled.

Be aware that enabling HP+ is free but does come with responsibilities on the part of HP and the customer (you).

Requirements for HP+ printers

This topic describes the requirements for HP+ printers.

NOTE: HP+ is only available in some countries/regions

Keep the printer connected to the Internet

HP+ printers are cloud-connected devices that must remain connected to the Internet in order to function. The
Internet connection enables the printer to deliver HP+ specific app features and firmware updates.

During setup, you must connect the printer to the Internet using a supported network connection. After setup, you can print using a USB cable connection, if desired, but the printer must still be connected to the Internet.

Use Original HP cartridges

Original HP cartridges are cartridges manufactured and sold by HP in official HP packaging. If non-Original HP supplies or refilled cartridges are installed, HP+ printers will not operate as expected.

What is Instant Ink?

HP Instant Ink is a Print-by-Page subscription service for which you are charged a monthly fee for a set number of printed pages.  (Each side of the paper is counted as a separate Page.)

While there is no additional charge for the ink, the subscription is not free and does charge each month.

IMPORTANT -- Ink is supplied only with an active subscription -

After the service is terminated by you or HP, all subscription ink cartridges stop working and must (should) be returned to HP.

Selecting the right number of pages for your plan is important.

======================

Instant Ink is a Print-by-Page subscription.

You are paying to print a set number of pages each month.

Each plan, small or large, comes with as much ink as needed no additional cost.

True -- The subscription is billed each month -- Instant Ink is not a "pay if you use" service.

What is "Free Ink"?

There is no extra cost for ink.

Ink is provided as part of your subscription - use a drop or use a cup full, ink is included at no extra cost.

Important

All ink activated by the plan and all ink sent to you works as along as the trail / subscription service is active.

  • After the initial Ink Kit is mailed out, ink is sent (only) when the printer notifies the service that ink is depleted and a shipment is needed.

and

  • Subscription / Instant Ink cartridges remain the property of HP and should be returned to HP at close (termination) of the service contract.

Who Benefits?

Instant Ink is an excellent service for those who print regularly, print high-density documents or artwork, or perhaps print lots of homework.  For example, those who benefit the most include Teachers, musicians, writers who like hard copy, large families, small business offices, community centers, churches, and others who love -- or need -- to print on paper.

So I think when I originally set up the printer, I didn't do anything with HP+ (or smart ink).

I have done a factory reset from the printer.

Then I opened the HP smart app and 'added a new printer'.

When I get to the end of that I get this message:

HP Smart 2025-09-04 at 11.52.54 am.jpg

.. and just like it says, it removes the printer from the HP Smart App.

The printer works fine though ... it's got an IP address (after joining Wifi during the setup).

But I can't get it add to the HP Smart App.

And so I don't have any 'chance' to add it to HP+ either.

OK -- I am guessing, that AFTER reading the requirements, you decided to try and switch the printer to HP+

Not sure why you issued a Factory Reset.

Perhaps it was recommended.  ?

Having not removed the printer before you applied the Factory Reset seems to have left the app in an unusable condition.

Makes sense -- factory reset removes all the settings from the printer.

If you have reapplied the network settings (to the printer), then you have at least that much left.

Were this Windows, I might be able to help.

The best I can offer is to uninstall the app > reboot the computer > Install a fresh copy of the HP Smart app.

What about any "app" data in your user account on the Mac?

That I don't know --

Try the uninstall / reinstall of the app.

I will send the problem to our moderators -- perhaps they can ask an agent that knows MacOS to assist.

@RobWilcox1973, Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out about your query regarding "Print Anywhere" issue!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

The "Print Anywhere" feature on the HP OfficeJet Pro 8022e typically requires activation through HP+ or HP Instant Ink setup. If it is greyed out, this may indicate that the printer is not currently registered under these services.

Here are some steps you can try to enable "Print Anywhere":

HP Smart App Setup: Ensure you're using the HP Smart app to manage your printer connectivity and have the latest version of the app installed on your macOS device.

Network Connection: Verify that your printer is connected to a network, either through Wi-Fi or Ethernet, as "Print Anywhere" requires network connectivity.

Enable HP+ or Instant Ink: You may need to set up HP+ or Instant Ink services if you haven't done so initially. These services are often linked with advanced features like "Print Anywhere". You can do this by visiting the HP website or through the HP Smart app.

Account Status: Check your HP account status through the HP Smart app or the HP website to ensure your printer is activated with HP+. Sometimes, registration issues can cause certain features to be unavailable.

Firmware Update: Make sure your printer has the latest firmware updates. You can check and update the firmware via the HP Smart app or directly through the printer settings menu.

Hope this helps!

Take care, and have an amazing day!

I think I worked out how to do this ... the Windows app works differently to the MacOS one. I tried it on Windows, and was able to add HP+ and now my printer 'see's the Print Anywhere option.

@RobWilcox1973

Some good news, then.

I wish I could help with the MacOS side --

I have iOS / iPadOS -- on both iPhone and iPad 12.9 my HP Smart is still "Smart" and not "APP" --

It does seem like once HP+ is enabled that the "application" (either one, whether updated or not) should be able to Add Printer and grasp that HP+ is active.  🐀

HP Smart (HP APP) Shortcuts might be a good place to test -- the Shortcuts appear to work the same across platforms.

General Example - HP Smart Shortcuts - Cloud / Save

HP_Smart_Shortcuts_Cloud_Save_PDF_11HP_Smart_Shortcuts_Cloud_Save_PDF_11

@zoey7886 perhaps has access to MacOS -- and the HP APP if the HP Smart application has been replaced on your Mac system.
