Print without going through the internet.

I am extremely frustrated with HP. I have a printer that I wanted to hook-up to my local network ONLY. Seems I can't do that. I have to run through the internet (assuming through HP) to scan anything.  To do that, I must sign into my HP account! I don't want them to know when I print much less what I print! Is there any way to set up my Officejet Pro 8720 to print & scan through my local network? I don't mean connecting a USB cable because we have multiple computers.

Install full feature printing and scanning software on a computer and you can use the printer without an internet connection.

I have already installed all of the available software you mentioned. It still wants me to sign on to my account to scan. I consider that "going through the internet" as you now know I am scanning. That's unacceptable.

You didn't.  You installed HP smart which requires an HP account.

You need to download drivers and install them.

Hmm. You are proving my point. The fact that you claim “I didn’t” implies you know if I downloaded drivers or not. I can assure you I have downloaded drivers several times to no avail. I will try again but if you are tracking what I am doing that’s creepy. And it’s why I won’t buy you printers until that’s fixed. Also, just saying “you didn’t” without instructions on how and where to do it is not helpful.

You can install the printer in 2 ways. One way is to use HP smart which requires the user to sign in, and the 2nd way is just to install a full driver. Nothing creepy I just used common sense to know you didn't do it in a way that doesn't require an internet connection and any user details to work.

Uninstall HP smart from your computer, download the full drivers-software package and install those.

Great. First when I checked, the software you said was already on my computer but Okay.... I deleted software as you directed and installed drivers you designated. After numerous tries, it is stuck on finding my printer-scanner and says unsuccessful network installation. I have clicked retry several times and nothing works. Please help.

And by the way, It is stuck on sending error report to HP for 15 minutes with no way to turn that off besides turning off computer. This thing used to work but the software "upgrades" have ruined it.
