HP OfficeJet Pro 6978 All-in-One Printer
Microsoft Windows 11

My router was changed out with a new SSID and password. My printer's config screens, including the wireless setup, show the message 'This feature has been locked by the person who set up the printer.' I don't recall putting any "lockout" on any features. Options on the config screens are grayed out. Do I need to do a factory reset, and how is that accomplished?

Hi @jdoubledee,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If you're unable to access certain features on your HP Printer, it's possible that there's a security or administrative lock in place. Performing a factory reset might help resolve the issue. Here's a general guide on how to perform a factory reset on an HP OfficeJet Pro 6978.

Access the Printer's Control Panel:

  • Make sure the printer is turned on.
  • From the printer's control panel, touch or press the "Back" button to get to the main menu.

Navigate to the Restore Defaults Option:

  • From the main menu, navigate to "Setup" or "Tools" (depending on your printer model).
  • Look for an option like "Restore Defaults," "Factory Reset," or "Reset All."

Confirm the Reset:

  • Select the option to restore defaults and confirm your choice when prompted.
  • The printer may ask for confirmation; follow the on-screen instructions to proceed.

Wait for the Reset:

  • The printer will restart and perform the factory reset. This process may take a few minutes.

Reconfigure Wireless Settings:

  • Once the factory reset is complete, you'll need to set up the wireless connection again.
  • Access the wireless setup option and enter the new SSID and password for your router.

Test the Printer:

  • After setting up the wireless connection, print a test page or perform a test print job to ensure that the printer is working correctly.

It's important to note that a factory reset will erase any custom settings you've configured on the printer. If you have any specific settings you want to preserve, make a note of them before proceeding.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.

No, sorry, this did not work. As mentioned in the original post, most everything is greyed out. I can print reports, but that is about all.
